Campagnolo has announced that it will be making a new cassette featuring a 29 for the first time in the 11 speed gruppo. The cassette will be a 12-29. The 10 speed gruppos already included a 29, in a 13-29.
Climbers will be happy.

Even better---the standard "short-cage" 11 speed rear derailleurs being shipped now will handle the 29 cog. Previous model 11-speed setups can be modified with a replacement part available from Campagnolo.

ReplyDeleteNow that's a climbing block for none climbers. The REAL climbers might use a 12-25, but a 29 it would have to be epic steep before one of those was fitted.
ReplyDeleteBig Rich: Since we non-pros love to go where the pros go and the pro have used triples on Zoncolan (and Angliru in Spain) I think a 29 would be very useful for us, and for them....
ReplyDeleteAt 50 and at 6'2" 173 lbs, I welcome the option.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have chronic tendonitis in my left knee and having to mash a 25 on long or steep climbs can trigger a flare up.
We equip our rental fleet with 30-26 (triples) and 34-29 (doubles) and suggest clients bringing their own bikes do the same. In 20+ years of running bike tours in Italy (since 1998 as CycleItalia) I've yet to have a client tell me the low gears were unused on climbs like the Mortirolo or Tre Cime. I remember a certain Texan riding Mortirolo some years ago with a 39-27 and wishing for lower gears. I hope he comes to the Giro in 2010 and gets a chance to ride it in competition!
ReplyDeleteThe ratios will be: 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-26-29
ReplyDeleteI am a spinner!!! I like to ride with a 100 - 110 RPM Cadence. I'd love to have a 34/29 gear available.
ReplyDeleteI have a 15 year old bike with a combo Record/Chorus Build and a 53/39 Crank set. In all of the 15 years combined miles I've put on that bike, I was in the large ring for probable ten minutes. Who the hell is turnin 53/12 gears. Are people riding at 40mph? Or do they Just ride with a pedaling cadence of 30?
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThis is an old thread but I got question about the 12-29 cassette. I hope there some help from the campy guru.
I'm currently on 39/53 & 12-25, I'm planning to swap the cassette to 12-29 for some hilly & mountain rides. I was told by LBS that it may require a longer chain & when I swap back to 12-25, it'll have a sagging chain. Is this true?
Or I could just retain the current chain length & still fits the 12-29?
Thank you.
