2011 Giro d'Italia, Stage 1




HTC Highroad won the first stage of the 94th Giro d’Italia. The winning team completed the time-trial in 20’59” at the average speed of 55,186 km/h. Team Radioshack was second in 21’09” and Liquigas – Cannondale team third in 21’21”.

Italian rider Marco Pinotti, crossing the finish line first, is the first Maglia Rosa Estathé at the Giro 2011. "It’s a great honor for me to wear the pink jersey. The victory, however, belongs to the whole team. I cannot thank the guys enough."

Marco Pinotti is a time trial specialist having won five Italian national championships in the "cronometro". He was born in Osio Sotto (Bergamo) in February, 1976; he turned professional in 1999. Pinotti has previously worn the the Maglia Rosa, in 2007 for four days.

It is estimated that there were more than 1 million spectators.

The longest team time trial: 1983 the 70 km BRESCIA – MANTOVA.

The shortest team time trial: 1956 the 12 km GENOVA – GENOVA.

The fastest team time trial: 2006 PIACENZA – CREMONA at an average speed of 56.860 km/h.

Today's stage is a 244 km flat stage from Alba to Parma, expected to finish in a sprint finish.
