Basque Jon Izaguirre Insausti (Euskaltel Euskadi) won the 16th stage, Limone sul Garda – Falzes (173 km), after attacking his nine breakaway companions on the slopes of the final climb to the finish. Finishing 2nd and 3rd were Alessandro De Marchi (Androni Giocattoli Venezuela) and Stef Clement (Rabobank).
The peloton, containing all the GC contenders including Maglia Rosa Rodriguez, were content to let the no-threat-to-GC breakaway go and conserve their energies for tomorrow's stage. The peloton finished almost nine minutes back.
"It's my first victory in a race of this level," said Izaguirre Insausti. "Before this I had one won stage at the Vuelta of Asturias, I am in my second year as a professional. I think a victory in the third week is significant in that it says I can recover very well. Beginning tomorrow I will work for Nieve (ed. note: Mikel Nieve Ituralde currently 18th at 0:04:20) who is riding very strong on the climbs and is pointing to a stage win and can possibly do well on GC."
Race leader Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) had this to say: "Tomorrow will be a stage to gain time. There is a lot of talk about the descents but I believe there will be more attacks on the climbs than the descents. I believe the Giro will be won on the climbs, not on the descents. There is talk about Basso not being a good descender but I believe that anyone that is tired from the climbs will not be able to do a good finishing descent. I think that tomorrow Liquigas will make the race very hard because they have the riders that can make a difference. Surely, it will be them that will make it a hard race."
What Rodrigues is referring to, the 186 km from Falzes to Cortina d'Ampezzo:
Scarponi had this to say: "Tomorrow we'll cover so many climbs, Falzarego, Passo Duran, Forcella Staulanza and Passo Giau. No one can hide. I don't know which climb I like the most, they're all so tough and so exciting at the same time. I know I'll be supported by my very competitive team mates, this will be very important in a stage in which not so many riders will still be in the head group after the first climb. Cunego is riding very well, it will be important to have him by my side".
Cavendish: "My goal is to survive and arrive in Cortina so I can contest the sprint the following day."
It should be a very exciting stage tomorrow.
