Ivan Santaromita (BMC Racing) was the surprise winner of the men's Italian national road championship race. The 29 year old rider from Varese beat Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Merida) and Davide Rebellin (CCC Polsat) in a sprint finish in Fondo.
"The Italian championship is something special for me," said the new champion. "I dreamed of this jersey which so many snub. Even in the past few years I tried to win it and I've placed among the leaders, this time I went for the win and I won. With two experienced rivals like Scarponi and Rebellin I knew there was no room for error."
