Fucilata di Goodwood

The 2012 UCI Road World Championships will take place in Limburg, the Netherlands, between 15 and 23 September 2012. The event consists of a road race and a time trial for men, women and men under 23.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the "Fucilata di Goodwood" (the Goodwood rifle-shot), the descriptor for Giuseppe (Beppe) Saronni's memorable action leading to his victory ahead of Greg LeMond and Sean Kelly in the road world championship in Goodwood, England, in 1982.

Saronni's winning Colnago is in the Colnago museum:

Today, Saronni is the team manager of Lampre-ISD.

  1. Respectfully, the Colnago pictured can't be Saronni's - it's too big! Just comparing the headtubes of the bike in the museum to the one in the photo of Beppe winning at Goodwood shows what I mean.

  2. Thanks for the memory! Tough to verify authenticity on the bikes for sure, there seem to be a lot of replicas of the winning machines out there...but they're still nice to look at even if they might be THE bicycle.

  3. You might like my article for Cadence Performance on the '82 Worlds; we know what happened, but I dug out the start sheet the other day, which has many interesting names amongst the young amateur & women riders: Chris Carmichael, Andy Hampsten, Davis Phinney, Paul Kimmage & Connie Carpenter, amongst others. Do have a look: http://t.co/63az6k6G
