Liz Hatch: An Invitation to the GiroDonne

American Liz Hatch, simultaneously known as a very good professional cyclist in the U.S. and for her photospread in MAXIM magazine, recently was invited to join an Italian team and her first race was the GiroDonne. Here are her comments, before and after the race:

5-4-3-2-1 it's time for the Giro

"I'm gonna puke."

"You're fine, just relax."

"Nope, definitely have to puke."

"Focus, idiot!"

And so continue the voices in my head. Can I blame them? Not really. What normal person wouldn't be nervous, it's the Giro d'Italia for god's sake! (Normal is all relative when it comes to pro cyclists; I've never met a normal one in my life. Eccentricities amplified!)

The countdown to the start of the Giro prologue begins 5-4-3-2-1 beep and things snap into acute focus. Adrenaline, that sweet rush of warmth, a chemical reaction that makes an athlete feel superhuman fills my body and I'm off. Legs pushing the pedals over quicker and quicker, the feel of gears shifting and the disc wheel hissing. In aero tuck I imagine I'm a knife cutting through the evening air and slicing the noise of the crowd in two parts. A clean precise line. I pretend that my legs are not screaming in an ever-growing fiery pain and if that doesn't work I tell myself that the pain is the most enjoyable feeling one can experience. Anything to convince the brain that the legs are doing what they should be doing, not to give up until the line has been crossed.

So many times a cyclist repeats this ritual in their career but for me this particular moment carries with it extra importance. This is my first Giro d'Italia, a race I grew to love over the years of being a cycling fan before I ever raced a bike. If someone would have told me four years ago when I lined up for my first small town criterium that I would be perched atop the start ramp of the world's most beautiful stage race (in my opinion), I would have told them to have their head checked. Yet, here I am in my second year as a professional, in Italy, on an Italian team and doing the biggest race in the country. Bonkers!

So how did I get here? Only months ago I was still racing in the US with my team, Vanderkitten. Aware of what a huge opportunity it was to race in Europe, and specifically the Giro, they were kind enough to "loan" me to a small Italian team based in Lucca, Italy called System Data. I can't fully express my gratitude to my team and teammates back home for all their support and understanding, which has allowed me to start on the path to fulfilling my ultimate goal: racing full time in Europe.

And so it began, my Tour of Italy. 2.7km of sweet suffering. In the end I placed 28th. Not bad I tell myself, but naturally a competitor is always searching for more. Faster, stronger, better.

Not bad doesn't quite satisfy the appetite. Domani, as they say in Italy. Domani.

So here is where I leave you for tonight, my bed is calling and there is another race tomorrow... See you then?

ed. note: Hatch finished 98th of the 105 finishing riders

Donne and dusted

After 10 days and many hundreds of kilometres the Giro Donne has finished. As I sit in the car on the drive back to Lucca I'm quiet, reflective and trying to gather my thoughts on my experience from the past week and half. So many thoughts - things I learned; things I assumed I knew but didn't; things I wish I had done differently; but most of all how much I enjoyed the race. Even the bad moments (and there were plenty of those).

I won't go into a play-by-play account of each stage as I honestly can't remember much of it in finite detail although strangely it's a vivid burning memory in my head I won't soon forget. In the end I feel like the details of a race are left behind us on the road, a play-by-play is always just an interpretation of what happened. For me it's the behind the scenes stories that tell the most interesting tales.

So where do I begin? With the word respect.

Respect for the women who pedalled and pushed themselves beyond the limits of what most would ever consider natural. These are tough, strong, buoyant athletes. They fight for every last metre, they crash, break themselves and get back up, they love racing bikes with a passion. And I am honoured to have finished among champions and unknown riders alike. We may not all be friends off the bike, I may never know more than someone's name, but I applaud each of us.

This year's race was said to be one of the hardest in years therefore I would like to pay extra respect to the girls who raced their asses off despite the obstacles. For instance the rider who told me she was at the race without a mechanic or massage therapist. It takes guts and extraordinary fortitude to suffer for something one has a deep love for.

In the cycling world it's more often the men that get the glory, so to speak, but I can assure you that the women race just as hard and most of the time without many of the advantages one would expect a professional athlete to have. In no way am I taking away from how tough the sport is for men, I am only wishing to pay tribute to our side and say that I am endlessly inspired by my peers.

In the grand scheme cycling is just a sport but it might change individual lives. In fact I'm sure it does as I'm personally one that has been changed for the better because of it. The life experiences racing has afforded me and the sporting family I've gained and learned from are priceless. All from a perfect, simple machine - the bicycle. Belissima!

GiroDonne Conclusion, Stage 9

On the last stage to Grumo Nevano today Claudia Häusler (Cervelo Test Team) retained the pink jersey to win the 2009 GiroDonne, the women’s equivalent of the Giro d’Italia. Hausler finished in the peloton while her teammate Kirsten Wild out sprinted Giorgia Bronzini (Safi Pasta Zara) and Diana Ziliute (Safi Pasta Zara) for the stage victory.

“It was a victory for the entire team,” said Claudia Häusler. “We all worked very hard for the victory and we are all very happy that we won the Giro. After the third place last year, it was amazing to be on the top of the podium – it was an unbelievable feeling. The best part was that had so much fun as a team the entire 10 days. That was surely a contributor to our victory.”

Cervelo Test Team Sports Director Manel Lacambra said, “These were perfect days in Italy; we won the Giro, we had several stage victories, and we also won the maglia ciclamino and the team classification.”

Emma Mackie's Lotto-Belisol teammate, Elizabeth Armitstead, held on to the white jersey for best young rider and finished 15th in GC. Emma finished 51st in the GC. Congratulations!

GiroDonne, Stage 8

Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nurnberger) put on a show of strength today on the 115.6 Km stage from San Marco dei Cavoti to Pesco Sannita as she undertook a solo escape. Worrack began her escape from 91 Km and immediately took a substantial lead. Chasing Worrack were four riders: Svetlana Bubnenkova (Fenixs), Tatiana Guderzo (Michela Fanini Record Rox), Loes Gunnewijk (Flexpoint) and Shelley Olds (USA). Worrack maintained her lead and arrived at the finish with a lead of 1 minute and 35 seconds ahead of the four chasers. Second to arrive was Shelley Olds, followed by Svetlana Bubnenkova.

With the loss of Amber Neben due to a crash on Stage 5 the Equipe Nurnberger squad had to develop a new strategy for the latter part of the race. "Once there was no possibility of a GC victory I was free to try for a stage victory", said Worrack.

The pink jersey remained with Claudia Hausler (Cervelo Test Team) who along with her controlled her GC rivals, and in a sprint arrived 6th and ahead of the other GC contenders. Cervelo Test Team Sports Director Manel Lacambra, looking forward to the final stage tomorrow, said, "A quite flat stage is ahead of us; the Giro is not finished but if nothing exceptional happens we will win the GC."

Judith Arndt (Team Columbia) who had been second in GC at the start of today crashed and suffered several contusions. She was unable to continue the race and was taken to the hospital in Benevento for examination.

GiroDonne, Stage 7

Germany's Claudia Hausler (Cervelo Test Team) has won today's 131 Km stage to Castel del Monte (BT) which began in a festive Andria. Häusler kept her the maglia rosa and increased her overall lead to 17 seconds over Judith Arndt (Columbia HTC) in the GC (who finished second today). Arndt's teammate, Mara Abbot, finished third.

Cervelo Test Team's Manel Lacambra, Sports Director, said, "Today was a very long and windy stage. Our team, once again, did a great job protecting Claudia throughout the stage. There were a lot of attacks during the race but nothing dangerous for our jersey. Columbia chased the break aways back and were working for Arndt whose goal was to win the stage and take the bonus seconds for the maglia rosa. In the final 4 km climb there was a group with Arndt, Abbot, Häusler and Armstrong. Armstrong helped Claudia and Abbot was working for Arndt. At the end, Claudia had the best reserves and won the stage one second ahead of Judith Arndt. She also received 4 bonus seconds for the victory and now leads the GC by 17 seconds. Our goal for the final two stages will be to defend our lead. Claudia's victory is not only a stage victory for her also a victory for the entire Cervélo Test Team – they did an amazing job today. We are strong and the strongest team will win the Giro Donne.”

“The wind and the hot weather made today's stage difficult," said Claudia Häusler. "But my team protected me perfectly and has worked very hard for me so that I could save all my energy for the final climb. Without this great team it would be not possible to ride like this. In the last uphill, Columbia was leading and working for Arndt but 500m ahead of the finish they went bust and I attacked with 300m to go and won the stage.”

"It was a very combative stage," said Judith Arndt. "We tried to put the pink jersey in difficulty but Häusler defended it very well. In the sprint there was nothing we could do. There are only two days remaining and 17 seconds between Häusler and myself. Mara Abbott, 3rd in GC, and I will do everything we can, including attacking alternately, to change the outcome of the race."

Emma Mackie Races in the Women's Giro d'Italia, Part V

Emma Mackie's (Lotto-Belisol) fourth report in her own words:

Stage 4, Day 5

The Tuesday stage that was meant to be easy was not so easy! But I'm learning that every stage is hard here. I was happy with my 11th place although I thought I was top ten so will have to keep trying! Rochelle had a great sprint for 6th (3rd left below in white/black/red kit).

Stage 5, Day 6

Wednesday's stage was in the mountains and with the 16% cobbles at the end I was not looking forward to it. I was surprised to have a good feeling in the legs and sat in the peleton until the end where we focused on helping Lizzy (Elizabeth Armitstead ) to the base of the last climb in a good position to keep the young jersey.

Stage 6, Day 7

I'm literally falling asleep in my bed! Its 11.30pm and after a typical long Italian dinner that took over 2hrs! I have just come back from my massage and am ready to pass out! The last couple of days have really started to hit the legs on the girls and myself (far right below).

Today was one of the hardest days I've had on the bike yet! It was a long day in the saddle and of all days my legs just didn't want to work! After hitting the climb straight away I found myself going backwards. I managed to get into a group with a few other Aussies which was nice for a chat! On top of the climb one of then girls even came prepared with sunscreen in her back pocket! Ive never seen that pulled out before but i did jump at the chance to put some on....it was a bit of a laugh!

Hopefully I have saved myself enough for a good feeling tomorrow! Lizzy was also feeling it today but showed how strong she is and managed to keep the young jersey.

So, it was another long drive after the race but we ended up in a beautiful hotel with a swimming pool! I managed to have a quick dip before dinner.

I'm definitely starting to feel this long, hard, Giro in my legs and have found myself counting down the days until Rome!

Its bed time for me now....

Ciao,

Emma

GiroDonne, Stage 6

Stage 6, 119 Km from Cerro al Volturno to Sant'Elena Sannita, resulted in the pink jersey passing from Emma Pooley (Cervelo) to Claudia Hausler (Cervelo). The stage winner was Judith Arndt (Team Columbia HTC) who is now only 12 seconds behind the pink jersey.

The first selection took place only 17 Km from the start on the climb of Macerone. At the KOM point the first across were Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nurberger), Susanne Ljungskog (Flexpoint) and Kristin Armstrong(Cervelo). On the second KOM, after 60 Km from the start, in Prato Gentile the order of arrivals were Mara Abbott (Team Columbia HTC), Nicole Brandli (Bigla) and Claudia Hausler (Cervelo). The decisive escape took place at 70 Km with the best among the escapees being Mara Abbott, Judith Arndt, Nicole Brandli and Claudia Hausler.

Chasing were Fabiana Luperini (Selle ItaliaGhezzi), Emma Pooley (Cervelo), Claudia Ryan (Cervelo) and Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nurberger) but losing time to the lead group. In the end Emma Pooley lost almost 5 minutes and the pink jersey.

The Columbia-HTC women now occupy second and third overall, with Arndt 12 seconds and Abbott 38 seconds behind Hausler's lead with three stages to go."It's a close situation overall and anything could happen over the next three days," pointed out Columbia-HTC team director Ronny Lauke. "Two of the upcoming stages are really tough, whilst the third is flatter and shouldn't change much overall. But when the gaps are as small as this you never know."

Manel Lacambra, Sports Director for Cervelo said, "Claudia is the new leader and we will do everything possible to keep the jersey with our team.”

Amber Neben, who crashed out of the race yesterday, was on her way back home to the USA today to have her doctor look at one of her fingers that may have suffered nerve damage.

GiroDonne, Stage 5

Noemi Cantele (Bigla) took the fifth stage of the Giro Donne on the demanding uphill, cobbled 16% finish in Cerro al Volturno. She powered away from five riders who were her companions in a breakaway which escaped the field on the day's big climb with 30km to go. The group included powerhouse sprinters Ina Teutenberg, the winner of stage four, and Giorgia Bronzini (Safi-Pasta) along with Cantele's teammate Jennifer Hohl, Julia Martisova (Gauss RDZ Ormu) and Sigrid Corneo (Selle Italia).

The breakaway arrived at the final climb in Cerro al Volturno with a one minute lead. Cantele said she had been warned about the difficulty of the final climb by her masseuse. "I was warned that it was harder than I could imagine. I attacked at the start of the cobbles and by the end I was zigzagging. I didn't have anymore to give." Bronzini added, "The last climb was extremely hard. We all came to an almost complete stop before the finish line, only Cantele could continue on. Brava!".

Cervelo's Emma Pooley finished near the front of the peloton, which was led home by Columbia-HTC's Judith Arndt, to maintain her lead in the overall standings. "Today, a breakaway of 6 riders reached the finish, but our team was in control of the race and did not allow the time gap to go over 2 minutes,” said Cervelo Test Team Sports Director Manel Lacambra. “Our goal was not to take the stage win but to defend the maglia rosa, which worked very well. On the cobbles on the final climb we gained some seconds on Mara Abbot which moved Claudia into second in the GC. Tomorrow is another tough stage with two challenging mountains. Our strategy again will be to defend the maglia rosa.”

Amerian Amber Neben, who held the pink jersey after the time trial, crashed out of the race while sitting in fifth place in the GC. Neben hit a rock and flew over the handlebars and was bruised and scraped up, but later examinations at the hospital revealed no serious injuries.

In the jersey classifications Judith Arndt took over the green jersey.

GiroDonne, Stage 3

A tough mountain stage today saw Mara Abbott (Team Columbia-HTC) outsprint Emma Pooley at the end of the 106.4 Km stage for the stage victory. Emma Pooley's finish enabled her to take the pink jersey.

The stage began in Calcinaia a Prato and finished with a double ascent of the gruelling Monte Serra climb with a mountaintop finish. Monte Serra, at 917 m. in elevation, is the largest mountain in the Monti Pisani mountain chain.

The 23-year-old American was delighted about the victory. "It's really exciting. There are so many good riders on this team that even though I felt strong, it was difficult to imagine that I could actually be strong enough to go for the win," Abbott said afterwards.

Abbott initially broke away with Pooley on the first ascent of the 10-kilometre Monte Serra, but came off her bike on the downhill section of the climb. "The descent was very tricky because it had rained and I crashed, although fortunately I wasn't injured. Linda [Villumsen, Columbia-HTC teammate] guided me back up to the front group before we reached the Montesierra again.
"Almost as soon as we did, I got away again with Pooley. Then when [Pooley's teammate Claudia] Hausler got across, I attacked and managed to drop her, which left me and Pooley as stage leaders. Pooley did most of the work, but I couldn't collaborate because I wanted to defend [teammate] Judith Arndt's position on GC. Finally at the summit, I attacked about 800 metres from the top and went for the win."

Now second overall, Abbott was cautiously optimistic about Columbia-HTC's chances of winning, either with her or another rider. "There are some very tough stages coming up, but Judith [Arndt] is still high up on the overall so we've got a lot of options, not just me. But in any case, I'm very pleased about things have worked out today. It was cool!"

“It was a hard race,” said Cervelo test team Sports Director Manel Lacambra. “We controlled the race for the first 60 km, and then Pooley attacked on the climb and broke away with a few others. In the decent it was slippery as it was raining. From our team Claudia, Kristin and Emma (Pooley) were all involved in crashes and missed the lead. Claudia and Emma were able to make it back to the lead but unfortunately Armstrong was too far back. On the final climb Pooley attacked again and got away with Hausler and Mara Abbot. It was a hectic final. The finish sprint was won by Mara Abbot ahead of Emma and Claudia. With her second place finish, Emma took also the lead in the overall ranking. Luckily all girls are fine after the crashes and we can look forward to the next stages. I am very happy about the team performances today.”

Emma Mackie's Lotto Belisol teammate, Elizabeth Armitstead, held onto the white jersey.

Emma Mackie Races in the Women's Giro d'Italia, Part III

Emma Mackie's (Lotto-Belisol) second report in her own words:

Prologue, Day 1:

It is finally here, the start of the GiroDonne! Leaving the airport at 10.30am from Belgium and looking at the weather forecast in Pisa, cloudy and thunderstorms! I was not looking forward to the flight! But to our surprise we arrived in Pisa to sun! I’m always excited when I travel to Italy! I love coming here, the country, food and the best part of all, the Italian coffee...mmmm. I headed straight to the closest espresso bar to order "un cappuccino!" It didn’t disappoint.

So we have arrived at the hotel and it is very nice. I was surprised and happy to see we had air-conditioning! After a quick lunch I’m now relaxing before we leave in 30min for the 2.5km prologue!

After the prologue we arrived late back at the hotel, I think 11pm. So I was looking forward to a good night sleep after a long day and a hard short prologue in the heat! So I’m not sure where I finished think around mid field (ed. note: 70th). But with the days ahead this is not so important for me.

Stage 1, Day 2:

Today was a hard day! The heat was nearly unbearable and I’m from Australia!! Today’s stage was 99kms with two main climbs with the finish on top of the last climb! I got over the first climb with the front bunch. My legs feeling good considering I haven’t done much climbing lately. But the heat today really hit me. I heard from my team mate that the average temperature today was 38 degrees (C)! On the last climb I was trying to keep good position as it was going fast with Cervelo driving it on the front. In the last 2ks I was thinking great I could try for a good finish and tried to move up on the outside with 1k to go just as they kicked on the front! I'd moved to early and could feel the lactic rise from my legs to my throat and had to ease up as I'd lost too much. Now I just wanted to cross the line! But as soon as I did I was grabbed by the doping control, just my luck! So it’s been a lot of rehydration this afternoon. I had the best massage from Steffano our Italian masseuse. We have just finished dinner and I’m now ready for bed and looking towards the 13km time trial tomorrow in the heat! So for now it’s goodnight.

Ciao

Emma

GiroDonne, Stage 1

Edita Pucinskaite (Gauss RDZ Ormu - Colnago), race winner in 2006 and 2007, won the opening road stage and took the pink jersey of the GiroDonne today by outsprinting Italy's Fabiana Luperini (Selle Italia Ghezzi) and Germany's Judith Arndt (Team Columbia HTC Women) on the uphill finish in Pratolino di Vaglia.

"It's a wonderful feeling, unbelievable," said Pucinskaite. "I have suffered much in recent months, not having much success. I dedicate this victory to my team and to Ernesto Colnago, who have both made me feel important and assisted in putting me at ease. The Giro is long, but I am ready to go forward with my head held high. For me this is the greatest of victories and I will be ready to join the fight in each stage going forward." She dedicated her victory to fellow Lithuanian Zinaida Stahurskaia who was killed by an automobile last month while training.

Pucinskaite now leads in GC by one second over Arndt and nine seconds over Italians Cantele and Luperini.

American Megan Guarnier, from the US National Team, attempted a solo escape which lasted from Km 16 to 52.
