Cycling is alive and well in Italy due to clubs such as the B. Gaiga - Polar club which is a well known youth development cycling team, founded in 1952 in the S. Lucia quarter of Verona.
From the ranks of the team, riders have gone on to become professionals including Campagnari, Carletto, Giusti, Guerra (Pietro), Mantovani, Testolin, Vaiente, and more recently Damiano Cunego.
The team has four categories of junior riders (I will have to research how the sub-categories breakdown):
Giovanissimi (G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G6)
Esordienti (1 Anno, 2 Anno)
Allievi
Juniores (17 & 18 year-olds).
Damiano Cunego, a member of B. Gaiga-Polar and riding for Team Italia in the World Chmapionships won the Junior Men's World Championship Road Race in 1999 on Corso Porta Nuova in Verona:
