2012 Giro d'Italia: Final Report

To conclude following the 2012 Giro d'Italia some follow-up items and things I didn't get to.

Felice Gimondi on the state of Italian riders in the grand tours:
"The Giro d'Italia, which ended Sunday, was very interesting because it has brought us new and exciting faces. It is a pity that the Italian riders have failed to reach the podium in Milan. This Giro has shown us that there are no leaders in the various Italian teams and that Italian cycling at the moment does not have riders that are able to win stage races. Basso disappointed, Hesjedal should thank Liquigas for having worked for him by playing into his hand."

Before the start of the Giro, Michele Acquarone was asked about how he will persuade other top riders to chose the Giro in the future. His answer:
"Last year at the bike show in Friederichschafen I met Edvald Boasson Hagen and asked him why he hadn’t been back since 2009, when he won a stage. He said it was simple – the only race he’d ever dreamed about and watched when he was a kid was the Tour de France. And that’s the case for a lot of people: cycling is the Tour de France. Our aim is to make it so that cycling is the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. We want kids from all over the world to have grown up watching the Giro. Only then will they always want to come when they’re professionals."

The only Italian to wear the Maglia Rosa was Adriano Malori of Lampre-ISD.

The were several "Le Miss" that I didn't mention, I wouldn't want them to feel slighted:

2012 Giro d'Italia, Stage 21 Results

Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver (Katusha) did indeed go to war with himself in the time trial turning in a credible performance but it wasn't enough to not lose the Maglia Rosa by a mere 16 second to Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin - Barracuda) who rode a superb TT. Sixteen seconds after 91 hours 39 minutes and 2 seconds of racing. Rodriguez's 2nd place is the narrowest margin in the history of the Giro since Fiorenzo Magni’s victory of 64 years ago.

Marco Pinotti (BMC) was the stage winner in 33'06" at an average speed of 51.117 km/h

Ryder Hesjedal becomes the first Canadian to win the Giro d'Italia. Joaquin Rodriguez finishes 2nd and a very strong TT performance byThomas De Gendt (Vacansoleil) moved him into 3rd ahead of Michele Scarponi. For the fifth time in Giro history, and for the first time in the last 17 years, since 1995, there are no Italians on the podium.

"I realized I could win 5 km before the finish line," said Hesjedal. "It was an incredible Giro, really tough, and without the help of the Garmin team I would never have managed to make history the way I did." After hearing the Canadian national he added, "Right now I'm thinking of my wife Ashley who is the most important thing in my life. I'm also thinking about the years of work that it took to be here for this crazy occasion. Let me enjoy this, I'll never forget it."

"I’m obviously not happy; it's really tough to lose by only 16 seconds, but what can I do? Think about the time bonuses that I didn't have, or the mountain stages all concentrated towards the end?" said Rodriguez. "I know for sure that in the future I can win a major stage race; these three weeks have confirmed that. This is where I start afresh".

"It's a real shame, but I didn't deserve it," reflected Michele Scarponi, on his 4th place finish. "I didn't come here just to be the first of the Italians. I had number one on my back, and I wanted a different Giro."

"Compliments to Hesjedal, Rodriguez and De Gendt, who deserved their places on the podium," said Basso. "I can guarantee that this was not my last Giro d’Italia. I’ve heard all sorts of things said, but my sporting funeral will not be for a few years yet. I have won at the Giro various times, always racing the same way. I'm happy to accept criticism, but I wouldn't have changed anything except for in the last few days, when I didn't perform as I would have liked. Now I'm just going to think about resting and then go to the Tour de France to help Vincenzo Nibali realize his dream".

The other Classification winners:
Maglia Rossa – Points: Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha)
Maglia Bianca – Best Young Rider: Riboberto Uran Uran (Sky Procycling)
Maglia Azzurra – KoM: Matteo Rabottini (Farnese Vini Selle Italia)

2012 Giro d'Italia, Stage 20 Results

Belgian Thomas De Gendt (Vacansoleil) put in a fantastic effort on the Stelvio to not only win the 20th stage of the Giro but to also put him in a position to be on the podium in Milano after tomorrow. Finishing 2nd and 3rd were Damiano Cunego (Lampre ISD) and Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel Euskadi). The stage took 6:54:41 to complete at an average speed of 31.831 km/h.

The GC after Stage 20:

1 Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver (Spa) Katusha Team 91:04:16
2 Ryder Hesjedal (Can) Garmin - Barracuda 0:00:31 (lost 14 seconds today to Rodriguez)
3 Michele Scarponi (Ita) Lampre - ISD 0:01:51 (lost 12 seconds today to Rodriguez)
4 Thomas De Gendt (Bel) Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team 0:02:18 (moved from 8th to 4th place)
5 Ivan Basso (Ita) Liquigas-Cannondale 0:03:18 (lost 1'33" today to Rodriguez, 5th from 4th place)
6 Damiano Cunego (Ita) Lampre - ISD 0:03:43
7 Rigoberto Uran Uran (Col) Sky Procycling 0:04:52
8 Domenico Pozzovivo (Ita) Colnago - CSF Inox 0:05:47
9 Mikel Nieve Ituralde (Spa) Euskaltel - Euskadi 0:05:56
10 John Gadret (Fra) AG2R La Mondiale 0:06:43

"I am really very happy to be able to win on a legendary mountain such as the Passo dello Stelvio," said De Gendt. "All the strongest riders in the history of cycling have won here. I hope it's a good sign for me because I believe I have a future in stage races."

De Gendt continued, "When I went on the attack on the Mortirolo my only thought was to start the final climb with enough of an advantage to keep my eighth place overall. Then when I was three minutes ahead (of the GC leaders)on the Stelvio, and Cunego was more than a minute behind me, I started thinking about the stage victory. I know the Stelvio very well, I have trained there for six years. I've climbed it 20 or 30 times, it's practically home. To be honest, I never thought of being able to win the Maglia Rosa at the end because I knew that my time advantaged would be decreased. I am very happy with fourth in the standings and that tomorrow could afford me an opportunity to get on the podium. I think Hesjedal will win the Giro d'Italia because he is only 31 seconds behind Rodriguez and he is much stronger in the time trial than Rodriguez."
It should be noted that De Gent is also an excellent time trialist. In Stage 20, 42.5 km, of the 2011 Tour de France De Gent was 4th:
1. Tony Martin (Ger - HTC-Highroad) 55 minutes 33 seconds
2. Cadel Evans (Aus - BMC Racing) at 7secs
3. Alberto Contador (Spa - Saxo Bank-SunGard) at 1min 5secs
4. Thomas de Gendt (Bel - Vacansoleil-DCM) 1min 28secs

Rodriguez: "Today we did not work because I wanted to put Hesjedal's team under stress. I think he struggled a lot but nevertheless he had a good stage. I have 2 minutes and 10 seconds on De Gendt in the overall standings but he did a lot of hard work today. Tomorrow I have to go to war with myself and lose the least time possible and hope for a miracle to be able to win this Giro d'Italia. The last time trial of the Giro is not like the first; Sebastian Webber, my trainer, has studied the route and told me that with all the turns that it is suitable for my characteristics."

Hesjedal: "I'm gonna give everything tomorrow."

Basso: "A bad day, to add to yesterday. No, it didn't go at all as I expected, and on Mortirolo I already realized how it would finish. I can only give my compliments to those who raced better than me".

Highlights of Stage 20:

2012 Giro d'Italia, Stage 19 Results

Add "scalatore" (climber) in addition to "time trialist" to describe Canadian Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Barracuda). Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) in the Maglia Rosa, Ivan Basso (Liquigas-Cannondale), and Michele Scarponi, were hoping and trying to drop Hesjedal today but instead it was Hesjedal that was doing the dropping on the final climb to the finish in Alpe di Pampeago.

Hesjedal, who was in the the GC group, almost caught stage winner Roman Kreuziger (Astana) who had gone in a break earlier. Hesjedal  was 2nd at 19" and Joaquin Rodriguez 3rd at 32". Rodriguez kept the Maglia Rosa by a slim margin of 17" over Hesjedal.

The top 10 GC after today:
1 Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver (Spa) Katusha Team 84:06:13
2 Ryder Hesjedal (Can) Garmin - Barracuda 0:00:17
3 Michele Scarponi (Ita) Lampre - ISD 0:01:39
4 Ivan Basso (Ita) Liquigas-Cannondale 0:01:45
5 Rigoberto Uran Uran (Col) Sky Procycling 0:03:21
6 Domenico Pozzovivo (Ita) Colnago - CSF Inox 0:03:30
7 John Gadret (Fra) AG2R La Mondiale 0:05:36
8 Thomas De Gendt (Bel) Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team 0:05:40
9 Sergio Luis Henao Montoya (Col) Sky Procycling 0:05:47
10 Damiano Cunego (Ita) Lampre - ISD 0:06:09

Kreuziger: "The time loss I suffered to the GC contenders on Wednesday in the stage to Cortina is a wound that this stage victory will not remove. I had prepared to try to win this Giro and to be dropped on the Giau was really bad. Today, I started believing that I could only win in the last 200 meters and at that point I really gave it all."

Rodriguez: "Today was a day to gain time on Hesjedal but instead it was the reverse, hats off to him, he was really strong. When Scarponi started his attacks I suffered, however, I said to myself that it was normal. When Hesjedal started to go he was really strong, too strong for me. I decided I could not follow him because I would have risked going beyond my limit. Tomorrow is a very important day, today I have suffered much, though, as I have said, the Giro is played day by day. Tomorrow we tackle the Mortirolo which is a climb that I really like, many have won the Giro on those ramps, many others have lost, I hope it's a great day ..."

Hesjedal:

Highlights of Stage 19:

2012 Giro d'Italia, Stage 19 Start

The start in Treviso today.

Five KoMs today, 52 km of climbing in the 198 km stage:
Sella di Roa, 2nd catgegory 908 m at 78.5
Passo Manghen, 1st category 2047 m at 123.3 km
Passo di Pampeago/Reiterjoch, 1st category 2006 m at 160.1 km
Passo di Lavazè 2nd catgegory 1805 m at 175.1 km
Finish at Alpe di Pampeago, 1st category 1740 m at 198.0 km

Very tough uphill finale in which Pantani (1998 and 1999) and Simoni (2003) have won in the past. Note that riders will go up Alpe di Pampeago twice. The final climb is 7.7 km with an average gradient of 9.8% and maximums of 16%.

Rodriguez, Basso, and Scarponi will all want to do all they can to drop Hesjedal today before tomorrow's final mountain stage to Stelvio.

At the start today at Piazza del Grano in Treviso were the Pinarello family. The stage start in Treviso was planned as a way to celebrate Giovanni "Nane" Pinarello's 90th birthday this year. Giovanni Pinarello is the founder of Cicli Pinarello.

There was a brief period, 1946 to 1951, in the Giro d' Italia when the last rider in GC would wear the "maglia nera" (black jersey). Here is Giovanni Pinarello wearing the "Maglia Nera" in 1951, the last rider to ever wear it.

Giro d'Italia, Stage 18 Results

Twenty-two year old Andrea Guardini (Farnese Vini Selle Italia), from Verona, won the stage in a sprint against Mark Mark Cavendish (Sky Procycling); finishing 3rd was Roberto Ferrari (Androni Giocattoli Venezuela). Guardini finished last yesterday on the mountain stage to Cortina. Today was the last possible stage for the sprinters as now two mountain stages and a time trial remain.

Highlights of the last km:

You can see that Cavendish is angry after crossing the finish line. He is said to have said, "Look who can even win at the Giro" which has renewed the complaints about Cavendish hanging on to the team car to make the time limit on mountain stages. Luca Scinto, team manager of Farnese Vini Selle Italia said, "He should know how to lose," referring to Cavendish and adding, "It was a perfect stage for Guardini, short (149 km) and downhill."

Guardini after the race: "First of all, I'm young and I should still grow a lot. The first week of racing I did not believe in myself, I was coming from a period where I could not do a sprint like I wanted to do. I knew that this was the last opportunity, a stage almost written for me. I was really motivated because I knew it would be either today or next year. I knew it within me that I could beat the world champion, I knew I had to anticipate him in the sprint."

The top 10 leaders in GC remain unchanged:
1 Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver (Spa) Katusha Team 77:47:38
2 Ryder Hesjedal (Can) Garmin - Barracuda 0:00:30
3 Ivan Basso (Ita) Liquigas-Cannondale 0:01:22
4 Michele Scarponi (Ita) Lampre - ISD 0:01:36
5 Rigoberto Uran Uran (Col) Sky Procycling 0:02:56
6 Benat Intxausti Elorriaga (Spa) Movistar Team 0:03:04
7 Domenico Pozzovivo (Ita) Colnago - CSF Inox 0:03:19
8 Paolo Tiralongo (Ita) Astana Pro Team 0:04:13
9 Thomas De Gendt (Bel) Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team 0:04:38
10 Sergio Luis Henao Montoya (Col) Sky Procycling 0:04:42

Rodriguez, Maglia Rosa, sees tomorrow's mountain stage, Treviso-Alpe di Pampeago Val di Fiemme, 198 km, with a tough uphill finish like this: "I think my advantage over Basso and Scarponi is sufficient (0:01:22 on Basso and 0:01:36 on Scarponi). Obviously, if there is an opportunity I'll try to put a few more seconds between me and them. I hope Hesjedal (2nd) has a bad day with the hard climbs that we are going to tackle. The last climb we will ride at 15 km/h, Hesjedal weighs 70 kg and I weigh 58 kg; on this I should certainly go better then him. Everyone believes that he will be dropped, I'm not so sure, however I hope so. My team mates Losada and Moreno are two climbers that are very strong and will stay with me until the end if the pace isn't too hard; we are not not going to set a hard pace, if it's hard it will be because of Liquigas."

Tomorrow, Friday: very tough uphill finish in which Pantani and Simoni have won in the past. Note that riders will go up Alpe di Pampeago twice. The final climb is 7.7 km with an average gradient of 9.8% and maximums of 16%. Rodriguez, Basso, and Scarponi will all want to drop Hesjedal.

Saturday: another mountain stage with the Mortirolo preceeding the mountain top finish on Passo dello Stelvio. The weather forecast has now improved: sun with a few clouds, afternoon temperature 3C with a windchill of  -2C. Check all the weather instrument readings at Passo dello Stelvio by clicking here. Sunday: final stage, 30km individual time trial in Milano.

2012 Giro d'Italia, Stage 17 Results, Part II

Rider comments:

Joaquin Rodriguez, Maglia Rosa: "In winning the stage I don't think I've proven to be the strongest. I went well for the entire stage but I don't think I was stronger than Basso. To me he was very strong on the climbs and in addition to me he was able to win today. It's justified to congratulate him on his performance. If Hesjedal does not get dropped the Giro is his. I hope he gets drops sooner or later, I'll do anything for this to happen because he is clearly the best against the clock (referring to the final stage in Milan on Sunday which is an individual time trial).

Michele Scarponi, who was dropped 350 m from the summit of the Passo Giau with cramping was able to get back into the finishing group of 6 with 2 km to go: "The Liquigas team set an incredible pace. After cramping on Giau I wasn't able to handle the first part of the descent. I couldn't pedal, what a pain I had. Luckily I was able to get back. It wasn't easy. Maybe I wasn't properly hydrated, maybe because the warmer temperature respect to the previous days."

Ivan Basso: "We tried to ride a tough stage and the team was outstanding, as always. Purito Rodriguez was excellent. I'm not a good sprinter. We cannot contemplate taking Hejedal to Milan with the standings like this."

Ryder Hesjedal: "I think Scarponi came back at us by following a car and that's a disgrace. I pushed beyond my limits to stay among the leaders. I tried to jump across on the downhill stretch. I could do no more than that."

Rigoberto Uran Uran: "In the finale I managed to catch up with the four leaders. It took me about 5-6 km. It was tough. Now, I'm there (in 5th at 0:02:56). I think there are five of us who can win the Giro."

The top 10 GC:
1 Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver (Spa) Katusha Team 74:46:46
2 Ryder Hesjedal (Can) Garmin - Barracuda 0:00:30
3 Ivan Basso (Ita) Liquigas-Cannondale 0:01:22
4 Michele Scarponi (Ita) Lampre - ISD 0:01:36
5 Rigoberto Uran Uran (Col) Sky Procycling 0:02:56
6 Benat Intxausti Elorriaga (Spa) Movistar Team 0:03:04
7 Domenico Pozzovivo (Ita) Colnago - CSF Inox 0:03:19

9 Thomas De Gendt (Bel) Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team 0:04:38
10 Sergio Luis Henao Montoya (Col) Sky Procycling 0:04:42

Tomorrow: a 149 km should be (but who knows?) an easy stage before the fireworks on Friday with 4 KoMs to Alpe di Pampeago followed by Saturday with 4 KoMs plus the first time ever mountain top finish at Passo dello Stelvio. Saturday's weather forecast for Passo dello Stelvio is currently 3C with a windchill of 0C, overcast with light rain or mist, possibly snow. The pass is completely open at the moment.

Even in the middle of Summer the Stelvio can have snow, see the Epic Stelvio story in this blog.
