2012 Tirreno-Adriatico, Stage 1 Results
The Australian GreenEdge Cycling Team has won the 1st stage of Tirreno–Adriatico, a team trial of 16.9 km in a time of 18’41”. The first of the team to cross the finish line was Matthew Goss who will therefore wear the Maglia Azzurra as race leader.
"This is a great day for Australian cycling," said Goss. "We finally have a top-quality team that our country can be proud of. And we riders feel an even greater responsibility". GreenEdge is the first Australian World Tour team and is based in Gavirate (Varese); see story about their training facility here.
The best-placed Italian team was Acqua&Sapone of Garzelli and Di Luca who were 39 seconds back, followed by Lampre-Isd of Scarponi at 46 seconds back and even further back were Nibali's Liquigas at 55 seconds. "After we analyzed the stage classification, I see our team time trial as quite good," said Lampre-ISD Sport Director Maini. "We could have recorded a time of 10" faster but we made some little mistakes during the stage. Anyway, we had to face the wind that began to blow during our performance and that also hurt the other teams that followed".
