2012 Giro d'Italia, Stage 17 Results, Part II
Rider comments:
Joaquin Rodriguez, Maglia Rosa: "In winning the stage I don't think I've proven to be the strongest. I went well for the entire stage but I don't think I was stronger than Basso. To me he was very strong on the climbs and in addition to me he was able to win today. It's justified to congratulate him on his performance. If Hesjedal does not get dropped the Giro is his. I hope he gets drops sooner or later, I'll do anything for this to happen because he is clearly the best against the clock (referring to the final stage in Milan on Sunday which is an individual time trial).
Michele Scarponi, who was dropped 350 m from the summit of the Passo Giau with cramping was able to get back into the finishing group of 6 with 2 km to go: "The Liquigas team set an incredible pace. After cramping on Giau I wasn't able to handle the first part of the descent. I couldn't pedal, what a pain I had. Luckily I was able to get back. It wasn't easy. Maybe I wasn't properly hydrated, maybe because the warmer temperature respect to the previous days."
Ivan Basso: "We tried to ride a tough stage and the team was outstanding, as always. Purito Rodriguez was excellent. I'm not a good sprinter. We cannot contemplate taking Hejedal to Milan with the standings like this."
Ryder Hesjedal: "I think Scarponi came back at us by following a car and that's a disgrace. I pushed beyond my limits to stay among the leaders. I tried to jump across on the downhill stretch. I could do no more than that."
Rigoberto Uran Uran: "In the finale I managed to catch up with the four leaders. It took me about 5-6 km. It was tough. Now, I'm there (in 5th at 0:02:56). I think there are five of us who can win the Giro."
