To participate, non-Italian resident riders must either be registered to a national cycling federation, or have a registration recognised by the Union Cycliste Internationale, or hold a medical certification for the race.

Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia, Miami-Coral Gables

A wild passion for pink is now beating in the hearts of many American cyclists, who partook in the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia during the weekend in Miami and Coral Gables. On Saturday, November 10th, several stands at the Expo welcomed bike enthusiasts from all over the country with a showcase of the latest products. Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, a strong advocate of cycling, paid a visit to the various exhibitors. He stated how important it is to promote this sport, not only excellent in supporting people’s health but also to preserve the environment, a subject very dear to bike-friendly Miami.

In the evening, at the breathtaking Biltmore Hotel of Coral Gables, the festivities continued with an elegant reception featuring outstanding guests: the campionissimo Mario Cipollini, the event’s testimonial; former professional cyclists Danilo Di Luca and Filippo Pozzato; and Formula 1 former driver Jarno Trulli, a bike enthusiast. Commissioner Ralph Cabrera, on behalf of the administration of Coral Gables, donated the Seal of the City to Super Mario and to Lorenzo De Salvo, who represented the RCS group. De Salvo grabbed the attention of the more than 100 VIPs with the 2013 plans for the Giro d’Italia signature Gran Fondo: Sea Otter Classic (April 20th), New York (May 5th), Pasadena (June 2th), and glamorous Beverly Hills in October, the last “stage” in California before a classic conclusion in Miami on November 10, 2013. “The format Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia represents a very important project to develop the knowledge and appreciation of the Giro d’Italia brand in the world, specifically in the United States. The events will convey the philosophy and the values of Giro to the world. We want to grow slowly and steadily,” said De Salvo. “This was our Year Zero: we are now ready to embrace 2013.” The iconic brand such as Giro was well presented with an emotional video, which captured in a few minutes unforgettable images – the best of the Giro d’Italia, from yesterday and today.

On Sunday, clouds of pink balloons bobbed near the starting line, celebrating the event’s start on Miracle Mile. About one thousand riders – lined up since dawn nearby Coral Gables City Hall – were ready to experience the wild excitement of the mass start. Pavarotti’s operatic buongiorno fade away to the rhythm of “We are the Champions,” while the countdown was led by the Consul General of Italy in Miami, Adolfo Barattolo. Next to the original trophy of the giro (“Senza fine”), beautiful Italian model Claudia Romani waved to the riders from the podium along with young Beatrice Fogliata. Opening the courses were three lovely FIAT 500s and a Ducati, part of the several Italian touches to the event. “It was so emotional to start next to so many champions,” said one of the participants. In key position, relaxed but ready to bite, were Cipollini in World Championship gear, Di Luca, Pozzato, Trulli, and American beautiful pro Liz Hatch. The riders concluded the different routes (25, 55 and 101 miles) at the Expo, where a delicious pasta party refilled their carbs and repaid their efforts.

The Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia experience offered many extraordinary moments: the courses, the battle with the wind, the picture with the signorine and the original trophy…. All those emotions will find a special place in the memory of those participants, who arrived from all over the United States and, in a good number, also from Italy. The next exciting Gran Fondo event will be in California in the spring, for the inaugural Gran Fondo Sea Otter. For additional information please visit www.granfondogiroditalia.com

"The route of the 2013 Giro d'Italia has been presented, the secrets of the stages are out and I've realized yet again how affectionate and caring people are about the Corsa Rosa.

I can understand it from messages from the fans, comments from the riders, reports from the media and from everyone who shares the same goals and passion for great cycling as we do.

Unveiling a new Giro d'Italia route is a bit like going out on a first date. It's exciting. You can't wait and you can't stop thinking about how it will turn out. Where are you going to go? What will you do? We can't wait until the 2013 Giro d'Italia starts in Naples on Saturday May 4. During those seven months, the expectations and excitement for the Giro d'Italia will grow every day, just like before a date.

I can’t wait for May too but first I'm curious to hear what everyone thinks of the route. After this year's race we listened to everyone to find out what they liked about it and also what they didn’t like.

Some people were very clear: 75% of the tifosi said that the 2012 Giro had been too tactical and so too controlled. 85% asked us to look after the riders more, especially at the finish of the sprint stages. People were divided about the mountain stages: 45% wanted to see big mountain stages with four or five major climbs, while 55% said we should focus on more spectacular and shorter mountain stages that have just one or two climbs in the finale. There was also a contrast in opinions on racing on the Strade Bianche dirt road roads. 25% of people want them in every edition of the race, 35% never want them and 40% want them but only every so often.

When we designed the 2013 Giro d'Italia route, we considered the fans' opinions very closely. We also listened to the UCI, the teams and of course, the riders. We tried to bring everyone's needs together and create three key values:

BALANCE: We wanted a route that is balanced and fair, and so one that allows the great riders to show their talents and skills. We designed a route that favours attacks by overall contenders right from the start of the race. That's why there's a spicy stage finish in Calabria –the home of the best Italian chilly peppers, a testing Classics style stage in the Abruzzo region and an important time trial, all in the first week.

RESPECT: We worked hard to design a route that is rider friendly as a sign of respect to the riders. That means a safe route, hard but not sadistically hard, which gives the riders a chance to recover between the stages. We've calculated that rider will on average reach their hotels by 7:00pm after every stage.

THE BEAUTY OF ITALY: We wanted to show off the beauty of Italy: Naples, Ischia, Matera, Florence, Vicenza, Brescia and with a route that also climbed the legendary mountains of cycling: the Galibier, the Stelvio and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

As Italian journalist Paolo Tomaselli wrote in Corriere della Sera, the route of the 2013 Giro d'Italia is like a beautiful necklace. In May we'll see who will deserve to wear it at the end of the race.

I've got a good feeling about the 2013 Giro d'Italia. I can feel that the interest and excitement in the race is growing around the world. Now it's up to us, the teams and the riders, to further develop the passion for the Giro d'Italia.

Let me know what you think via twitter (@micacquarone) or email (info@giroditalia.it).

Michele."

Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia: Miami/Coral Gables Edition

L-R: Bruce Hildenbrand, Consul Giuseppe Perrone, Michele Acquarone, Pat Hus
Las Vegas – The Giro d’Italia chose Interbike, the premier cycling trade event in North America, as the stage to announce the upcoming, tropical edition of the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia in Miami.

An emotional short movie about the history of the “toughest race in the world’s most beautiful place” set the mood for the press conference. Pat Hus, Managing Director of Interbike, in his welcoming remarks stated: “There is a long-lasting relationship between our show and Italy, a country that represents so much of what cycling is all about. It is only natural for Interbike to further this synergy with Giro d’Italia and Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia: a logical association for us.”

Gran Fondos are the new obsession of American riders, with thousands of participants pouring from all over the States to elite cycling destinations. It’s undisputable that an authentic Italian touch to these signature events makes them worth the experience. “We hosted a Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia in Pasadena last July and it was an excellent showcase of our Made in Italy products“ said Giuseppe Perrone, Consul General of Italy in Los Angeles. “For Italians, the Giro is not just a sport, but an iconic event, engraved in our history and surely part of our soul,” Perrone added, echoed from Miami by the Consul General Adolfo Barattolo in a note: “We look forward to welcoming the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia in Miami/Coral Gables, where Italy is regarded as a synonymous of design, elegance and technology.”

The press conference special guest, Michele Acquarone, director of the Giro d’Italia (RCS Sports), talked about the love story between cycling enthusiasts, Giro d’Italia and its champions. “As organizers, we want to reinforce the relationship between cycling fans and the mystique of the Giro. To grow the importance of Giro d’Italia in the world, we decided to bet on the United States, where the romance of this sport and Italy is strong. We had a pilot edition in Pasadena, and now we look forward to the upcoming Miami edition.” At the end, Acquarone revealed the exciting new Col du Galibier mountain stage summit of the 2013 Giro d’Italia.

The Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia Miami/Coral Gables, will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2012: a perfect wrap up of the cycling season with a blast of pink! For additional information visit: www.granfondogiroditalia.com

Francesco Moser at Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia, Pasadena, CA

Francesco Moser, one of the world’s most iconic riders of all times, will be attending the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia Los Angeles-Pasadena on July 21 and 22, 2012.

Francesco Moser is a living legend of cycling: with an impressive record of 273 career victories, he is the third most winning professional in cycling history! Because of his strong presence in the peloton, he earned huge respect and was nicknamed “the sheriff.” He dominated the global cycling scene from the early ‘70s to the mid -80s.

Moser was an innovator in the sport, and one of the first to understand the importance of aerodynamics on the bicycle. In January 1984, he astonished the world by beating Eddy Merckx’s world hour record with an incredible 51.151 kilometers (31.78 miles), besting Merckx’s 12 year old record by 1.72 kilometers (1.07 miles)! Later in the same year, Moser won The Giro d’Italia, in a dramatic time trial final stage against French athlete Laurent Fignon, who was leading with 1’21”. He won the stage using his special aerodynamic time trial bicycle and took the overall title in the Giro, by 1’03” over Fignon. The time trial was memorable and redefined the standards of the sport. Moser’s success changed bicycle design dramatically, by proving that aerodynamic equipment such as disk wheels were a winning formula for races against the clock. In May of the same year, He won the final stage by a 1’03” lead, in a dramatic time trial against French athlete Laurent Fignon. In his career, he won two World Championship, one in the road race (1977) and one on the track (individual pursuit, 1976). His remarkable victories in the one day classics include three in a row at the grueling Paris-Roubaix race 1978-1979-1980), two Tours of Lombardy (1975 & 1978), Milano - San Remo (1984), Fleche Walloon (1977), Paris-Tours (1974), and Gent Wevelgem (1979).

Today the champion is enjoying la Dolce Vita and is a successful wine producer in his beloved region, Trentino (Italy). While keeping in shape with daily rides, Moser is now focused on his winery, Cantine Moser (www.cantinemoser.com), producer of superior wines including Gewuertztraminer, Muller Turgau, Moscato Giallo and especially a superior Spumante Trento DOC, branded “51.151” just like his epic world hour record time, which features a pink label, in honor of the Giro D’Italia winner’s jersey!

Francesco Moser will be in Pasadena to celebrate the inaugural Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia. In addition to starting the ride on Sunday morning, July 22, the champion will attend the VIP evening reception on Saturday, July 21 and will be available Saturday afternoon, July 21st, in the expo area to meet and greet fans and cycling enthusiasts. There will be photo and autograph opportunities. For additional information please visit: www.gfgiro.com.

THINK PINK: GIRO D’ITALIA ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST GRAN FONDOS IN THE UNITED STATES

The 2012 Giro d’Italia might be complete, but American cyclists will still hear a lot about it in the upcoming months! RCS Sport, organizer of the Giro, is launching two Gran Fondos under its signature trademark.

Avid cyclists and fans can participate in the first Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia on Sunday, July 22 in Pasadena, CA and again on Sunday, November 11 in Miami/Coral Gables, FL. Both will be exciting, mass-participation rides that will take participants on unusual and scenic courses (different distances available in both locations). In addition to a good fix of pink, like the limited edition jersey of the event, there will be a unique opportunity to experience the Italian cycling lifestyle in the United States.

Michele Acquarone, General Director of RCS Sport, during the final Giro d’Italia press conference announced:  "The Giro d'Italia has always represented an exceptional vehicle to promote Italy; it is loved and followed by millions of enthusiasts around the world. For this reason, we decided to launch the "Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia," bringing the atmosphere of the Italian cycling around the world. To embrace this project of international branding, we will start with two Gran Fondos in two great American cities: Los Angeles and Miami."

The events promise to be a statement about anything Italian, thanks to 2-day expos, which will showcase the best of what “Made in Italy” stands for, and of course special guests and famed brands. "The Giro d’Italia has an appeal in California that goes well beyond the sportive importance of this historical Italian event» commented Giuseppe Perrone, Consul General of Italy in Los Angeles. «It is a brand that blends the distinctive elegance and design of Made in Italy with the charm of our country, unique for its culture and history."

Bill Bogaard, Mayor of Pasadena, is thrilled to welcome the first Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia:  "Our city is honored to be one of only two locations in the United States chosen to host the premiere Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia series. We proudly welcome RCS Sport and all the participants to a week-end in our city filled with fun and excitement."
