2011 Tour de France: Italy Stage Rumors

The end of October brings us to another presentation of the stages for next edition of Tour de France. The presentation will be held on Tuesday, October 19th at the Palais des Congrès in Paris.

What is known now is that the Tour de France will take place from July 2nd to July 24th, and that the the race will begin in the Vendée department and end, as always, on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées in Paris. The presentation will be streamed live beginning at 11:30 a.m. (French time) on the Tour de France website.

There are rumors that the Tour will be visiting Italy as follows:
- Wednesday, 20 July: from Gap or Embrum (France) to Pinerolo (Italy) via he Col d'Izoard, the Col de Montgenèvre and the Colle Sestriere.
-Thursday, 21 July: from Pinerolo to a mountain top finish on the Col du Galibier; this would mark 100 years from when the Galibier was first used in the Tour de France. In 1911 the Galibier came on the 5th stage which was 366 km in length. Only one rider made it over the Galibier without walking. Keep in mind that the bikes then were single speeds! Out of the 84 riders who started the tour, only 28 completed the race.

If you can't wait until Tuesday and like like to read predictions I recommend a visit here, where the above information of the possible Italian stages comes from.

Stories for the Italian Cycling Journal about rides, granfondos, having a good time cycling in Italy, Italian cycling history, etc. are very welcome. Contact me at veronaman@gmail.com. There are more than 1,500 stories in this blog. The search feature to the right works best for finding subjects in the blog and there is also a translate button at the bottom so you can translate each page. What I'm riding.
