3T London Olympic Editions

3T is launching a striking new edition of its road and MTB cockpit components to celebrate the Olympic champions who have won on 3T bars in the past 50 years.

Introducing the new livery, 3T chief executive René Wiertz said: “This London Edition honors all the champions that rode our 3T bars to victory during the past Olympic games."

Road and MTB sets
The London Editions are finished in brilliant, high-gloss white with a striking, asymmetric motif, suggestive of the prestigious rainbow colors: yellow, green, red, black, and blue. All items are sold as a package of bar, stem, and seatpost, one for Road, one for MTB.

The Road set comprises Ergonova Team, Arx Team, and Dorico Team. The MTB set comprises Xida Team, Arx Team, and Doric Team. A range of suitable sizes is offered. 3T Team bars and seatposts are built in carbon-fiber. The Arx Team stem is built in AL 7075 T6.

3T was originally called Tecnologia del Tubo Torinese (Turin Tube Technology), taking its name from the city of Turin, where it was founded in 1961 by Mario Dedioniggi.

Christian Vande Velde and squad members of Team Garmin-Barracuda are using the new 3T INTEGRA LTD stem during the Giro d'Italia. The INTEGRA LTD stem is Garmin-ready to give riders a dashboard for performance and navigation data. INTEGRA, an all-carbon-fiber unibody, houses and protects Garmin Edge® head units, improving security, aerodynamics, and appearance. Clamp bolts are concealed by a shroud, making the stem elegant and aerodynamic. The shroud, at the nose of the stem, is easily swapped out for a Garmin Edge Mount (available separately). The Garmin Edge (or other Garmin model), clicks in to the Edge Mount fairing, which protects the high-value device from the rough-and-tumble of life on the road, both in races and around the support truck. INTEGRA supports the screen at an ideal angle so riders can take in critical data at a glance – great for navigation at speed as well as measuring effort in a race. It also improves airflow around the stem compared with previous, improvised mounting methods.

3T Celebrates 50 Years, Introduces Carbon Wheels

The Italian brand 3T grabbed the opportunity of its 50th birthday to launch an all new product range, carbon wheels. The wheelsets are the Mercurio (tubular) and the Accelero (clincher). Details of the design and engineering of the sub-1400 gram 60-mm deep tubular rims are here. A couple of the nice features that make life easier: a patented cassette spline accepts Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo cassettes with no adaptation so you can share wheels between bikes with different transmission setups; the hub’s unique spoking means you can easily true the wheel or replace a spoke without taking the tire off.

3T, originally known as TTT, was founded by Mario Dedioniggi in 1961 in Torino. 3T handlebars and stems quickly became popular with Italian racing cyclists, and by 1970 they were in widespread use in the professional peloton. 3T was among the first cycle component manufacturers to switch production from steel to aluminum alloys. The firm worked closely with pro racers to refine handlebar design. 3T ‘bends’ took their name from the champions of the era – Merckx, Saronni, Moser, and Gimondi.

In 2007 3T was bought by René Wiertz, a former senior executive of the Dutch multinational Philips. He has brought all his skill as a deal-maker and team-builder to restore the 3T brand. The Technical Director is Richard McAnish, an expert structural engineer.

3T Cycling Revives Gimondi Bar/Stem for 50th Anniversary

We created the Competizione Gimondi anniversary bar and stem in response to the huge interest in the the one-off display item at Eurobike.

Sure there are still lots of NOS 3TTT alloy bars and stems in shops, but they are all late-90s patterns. As far as we know, nobody else is making this pattern bend, as ridden by the campionissimo! And none of them for sure has the 50th anniversary 3T logo.

Which do you think will appeal more, the Classic Polished or the Anniversary Gold?

We recently wrote about 3T's new META crankset, also introduced at Eurobike. It's nice to see the classic bars and stem returning for the 50th anniversary of 3T (TTT, 3TTT).

The company also announced at Eurobike that it is changing its name from new3T to 3T Cycling. 3T located in Madone, near Milano, was originally known as 3TTT — Tecnologia del Tubo Torinese (Turin Tube Technology). The firm was founded by Mario Dedioniggi in Torino in 1961. Dedioniggi was skilled at manipulating and bending steel tubes to fabricate the lightweight handlebars desired by racing cyclists, and Italian professional riders were among 3T’s first customers. The company became new3T in 2007 and switched production to carbon-fiber composite materials, and in 2008 it returned to pro cycling after several years' absence. For the 2008 season it sponsored the CSC team, which won the Tour de France.

3T Announces META Crankset

The Eurobike show begins on September 1st in Friedrichshafen, Germany, on the northern part of Lake Constance. One of the first new product announcements comes from 3T, the Italian component maker:

At this year’s Eurobike 3T is celebrating its 50th year in the bike business and does that with style. The company is launching here its pinnacle in carbon components; the new crankset, dubbed META which, according to 3T, "is a radical re-think of this most fundamental component."

The new META crankset, "Overturns conventional engineering concepts, is benchmarked against the best, and offers significant build advantages for amateurs and original equipment manufacturers." Whether 3T’s new carbon crankset can do all that remains of course to be seen. However, striking is the fact that META even offers an axle made out of carbon fiber.

3T CEO René Wiertz says about META: “It’s potentially 30% lighter than today’s benchmark cranksets – yet equals them in stiffness.” The pre-production META crankset weight stands at only 550 grams.

Commenting on the design of META, 3T technical director Richard McAinsh states: “We targeted the best-in-class products and believe that our new design achieves its goals for stiffness and light weight. An important driver in reducing weight was to eliminate the bulky ‘boss’ at the center of the crank spider. We did this by separating the crank and the axle. The axle is now a separate, full-carbon sub-assembly carrying the 5 mounting points for the crank and chainrings.”
