Campagnolo at ProTeam Level

A recent comment about why the Colnago C59 150 Unification of Italy anniversary edition didn't come with Campagnolo led me to look at the degree that Campagnolo is being used in peloton at the highest level. There are 18 teams that are designated by the UCI as a "ProTeam". Of these only 4 are using Campagnolo equipment:

Omega Pharma-Lotto
Groups: Super Record™

Quick Step
Groups: Super Record™
Wheels: Campagnolo

Movistar

Groups: Campy Tech Lab (electronic gruppo)
Wheels: Campagnolo

Lampre
Groups: Super Record™
Wheels: Fulcrum (Campagnolo owned brand)

Things are slightly better in the next tier down, the "Pro Continental" teams. Five teams use Campagnolo:

Top Sport-Vlaanderen
Groups: Super Record™
Wheels: Campagnolo

Team De Rosa
Groups: Super Record™
Wheels: Campagnolo

Europcar
Groups: Super Record™
Wheels: Campagnolo

Cofidis Competition
Groups: Super Record™
Wheels: Fulcrum

Team Colnago-CSF Inox

Groups: Super Record™
Wheels: Fulcrum

The answer as to why the Colnago c59 150 isn't offered with Campagnolo is that the bike is specifically designed for the use of Shimano's Di2 electronic gruppo. Campagnolo's electronic group is still in testing (by the Movistar team).

  1. Campagnolo is struggling in the team department against the big-money efforts of the S-companies. Everyone's stuff works pretty well and for the teams it's mostly an issue of how much money comes along with the free parts. Tiny Vicenza has a tough time competing with mega-makers from Asia in this category. But just like tiny Ducati vs Honda and Yamaha, we hope they keep struggling!
