2011 Giro d'Italia, Stage 3

Given the events of today, and the previous post which referred to Cavedish's expectations of carnage in the final kilometers, I thought it best to not wait until tomorrow for the Stage 3 report.

Leopard-Trek's Wouter Weylandt died today after a crash on the descent of the Passo del Bocco, 20 km from the finish. Medical assistance arrived within 20 seconds after the crash and efforts to save him carried on for 40 minutes.

While those life saving efforts were taking place the race continued to its conclusion, the riders unaware of the tragedy that was unfolding. All the award presentations were cancelled.

My deepest sympathies to Weylandt's family, friends and teammates.
