2012 Tour de France, Stage 13 Results

A long transitional stage can, at times, be a procession but the 13th stage of the 2012 Tour was anything but a stock sprint stage. A steep hill, Mont Saint-Clair, 23km from the finish ensured that some of the big name sprint specialists were eliminated from the rush to the line. And then, in the final kilometer we were again reminded of the strength of Bradley Wiggins who was the last lead-out man before the sprinters who were able to stay in contact with the front group over the Mont Saint-Clair hit their turbo buttons. It was an effort from the race leader that almost delivered team mate Edvald Boasson Hagen to the line first but the Norwegian simply couldn't hold off the charge of André Greipel and Peter Sagan who were first and second on a day that Orica-GreenEdge had hoped it would get revenge for the decision by the race jury to penalize Matt Goss 30 points for his sprint in stage 12. However, Goss, Farrar, Cavendish all lost contact on Mont Saint-Clair.

Note: one withdrawal today,  GALLOPIN Tony

Tomorrow: Stage 14, Limoux -Foix, 191 km. TdF analysis by Jean-François Pescheux: "We have reached the Pyrenees! But this is more of an appetiser than a mountain stage proper. Things will get going at kilometre 116 with the ascent to the Port de Lers, with 11.4 km at 7%. Then comes the Mur de Péguère, which is making its Tour debut and could deal some serious damage too: some sections are close to an 18% gradient, with 10.8% at the finish! Nevertheless, the distance to Foix will make great climbers hesitate. In my opinion, this is more of a stage for all-rounders such Voeckler and Chavanel. Or maybe a 50 man strong group with the freshest riders in it..."

With bigger mountains on the horizon, it's likely the GC battle will wait until after the second rest day. The race to Foix should be one for the opportunists but the list of potential candidates is shrinking every day... Sylvain Chavanel, Luis Léon Sanchez, Thomas Voeckler have all been aggressive so far this year and they may be getting tired. Jérémy Roy would surely like to avenge his loss in Lourdes last year and perhaps this is his best chance. Or, perhaps, Scarponi who finished in the lead group today but has been waiting for the Pyrenees to make his next move.

“On paper, it shouldn't be a day when things get out of hand,” said the race leader Bradley Wiggins about stage 14. “But, I think it's a day for the breakaway again and we'll just marshal everything on the last climb but it's a long way to the finish after that.”
