2012 Tour de France, Stage 5 Results

These stages are meant to run to a script: an escape goes early, they gain a big advantage and then the peloton slowly reels them in and there's a sprint at the end. That's roughly what happened on today's flat stage from Rouen to St-Quentin but someone forgot to tell Jan Ghyselinck of Cofidis and Pablo Urtasun of Euskadi-Euskaltel; this pair were part of the attack that went clear in the first kilometer. And they were only caught in the final 500 meters! There was another crash in the final 3km and the main victims were Tyler Farrar and Peter Sagan who were unable to contest the sprint. Up ahead the race for the stage victory was on in earnest: Goss was the first of the sprinters to start his run to the line – launching off the wheel of a team mate with 400m to go but he too ran out of steam just shy of the line and by then Greipel was at top speed. The German won his second successive stage of this Tour de France. Cavendish had the support of his team mates today and had a good train but Greipel was the stronger man.

Cancellara will keep the yellow jersey for another day. It's the 27th yellow jersey he has won, he now has the distinction of the most yellow jerseys without a Tour de France overall victory. There were no changes at the top of the GC.

Sagan didn’t report any serious consequences (bruise to the left elbow and gluteus) but was very disappointed: "I lost a great chance, first of all to earn important points for the green jersey. Unfortunately, every sprint has the same script: all riders want be in front of the group, some guys think they feel good and take risks that cause crashes. I know, we’re at the Tour de France and a victory here means a lot, but the risks are really high. Knowing that consequences of the crash are not severe helps me overcome my disappointment".

Petacchi finished 8th today and said after the race, "The finish was more demanding than yesterdays, it required a lot of energy in the legs. I was not as good as I was in Rouen. The team performed a good job, in particular we avoided getting involved in the crash. At 700 mt to go, I noticed I needed to recover positions so I raised my speed but my energy was finished".

Note: Marcel Kittel retired today. Of the 198 riders who started,  194 remain in the peloton.

Tomorrow: Stage 6, Épernay-Metz, 207.5 km. TdF analysis by Jean-François Pescheux:
"Sprint expected but not certain...There is another day of flat racing and thus the consensus is that this will be another day for the sprinters but there are some lessons to take home from the early stanza of Le Tour 2012: accidents happen, riders can falter, and some lead-out trains are more organized than others. Peter Sagan missed out on adding points to his tally in stage five because of a crash. Matt Goss has been consistent and appears to be getting closer to his first Tour stage win. André Greipel’s crew has proven to be the most formidable this year. "
