Sticker Shock: Colnago C59 Pricing
The cutting edge Colnago C59 Disc is going to cost approximately $19,200/£11,999 according to a BikeRadar report. We have details of the bike from its first unveiling back in March, Part I and Part II. The BikeRadar reported pricing is for a Shimano Di2 version, a Campagnolo EPS version uis also available.

Colnago C59 Disc, Disc Brakes the Next Wave? Part II
road.cc is at the Taipei bike show, taking place now, where the C59 Disc has been unveiled. Their observations:
"If you still don't think disc brakes are going to be big on road bikes in the next year or so, you might want to take a gander at this.
Yup, that's right. It's a Colnago C59, a bit like this one that we tested, only with disc brakes front and rear. According to Alessandro Colnago it'll be available from June… not sure if that applies to the UK though. The discs in question look like Colnago-branded Formula R1 units - a pretty sensible choice since they're the lightest MTB discs currently available. Going slightly against whet we've heard from other industry sources, Colnago clearly think that 140mm rotors front and rear will be plenty, since that's what they've specced for the C59.
The fork is entirely new, redesigned to cope with the twisting forces a disc brake imparts, and the stays at the rear are new too. The chainstays have a bulge on the inner face, increasing the cross-sectional area and adding stiffness. They've done the same to the fork; the inner face bulges towards the wheel for the same reason.
The dropouts are new and they accept a 135mm hub width. There's no brake calliper hole at the top of the seatstays or in the fork, and the frame will work with both mechanical and hydraulic discs. The disc mount sits between the chainstay and seatstay and inboard of the stays, and looks pretty neat. The C59 was always a good looking bike and we don't think this one - which we've seen at the Taipei International Cycle Show - is any exception. Except for the fact that it's grey.
"But what about hydraulic drop levers?", I hear you cry. Well, this bike is running Dura Ace Di2, which opens it up to options such as the third party Tektro levers that are knocking around at Taipei right now. They're not finished yet, but clearly Formula have been busy because their levers are.

We've never seen these levers before, and we didn't know they existed until today. They're a hydraulic Di2 lever from Formula, and they have a dual paddle behind the brake lever in the same sort of configuration as the Shimano ones. They look kinda classy to us. If you want to run mechanical gears and hydraulic discs you can do that too. At least you can when the SRAM Red hydraulic comes out in the summer...
The wheels are new too - Colnago Artemis Discs, they're called. You can't radially spoke a disc wheel so the Artemis Disc uses a two-cross lacing pattern at the front to handle the braking forces; there's 24 spokes front and rear. The wheel uses the same 50mm rim as the standard Artemis, just with two of the rear rims instead of the 20-hole front.
So how much does all this hydraulic gubbins add to the weight of the bike? About 200 grams, according to Alessandro Colnago who's been tweeting pics of the bike this morning. That doesn't seem like a huge weight penalty and it would still be possible to build the C59 up at around the UCI weight limit with some nice light handlebars. The bike will be available as a complete build and also as a frameset in the 2013 lineup. It'll cost lots and lots and lots of money."

Colnago C59 Disc, Disc Brakes the Next Wave?

Colnago unveiled their "C59 DISC" today which I believe is the first, existing, top-of-the line road frame from a manufacturer to now be offered with disc brakes.
From the announcement:
"Welcome to a new era of high performance road bike braking, the Colnago C59 Disc.
Colnago have taken a bold step towards the future of road bike evolution with the introduction of the C59 Disc. Featuring fully hydraulic front and rear disc brakes it is set to bring a whole new level of performance and safety to the Colnago road bike line. The frame and fork are fully compatible with standard PM calipers too.
With twin 140mm diameter discs the frame and fork have also been redesigned in the key areas where the brakes are mounted. The fork is completely new, whilst at the rear of the main frame the chainstays and the seatstays are also new, to cope with the increased loading that the disc brakes generate at their mounting points. The C59 Disc is compatible with both electronic and mechanical groupsets.
Along with the main chassis changes, Colnago have also designed their own matching wheel system, the Artemis Disc. These wheels feature disc-specific hubs and full carbon composite wheel rims.
Now, no matter the weather, you can have the most powerful and controllable braking system available on a road bicycle. The system is easy to service, should it ever need servicing – as the system is essentially closed and there are no cables to replace or wear out. The regular maintenance will only consist of checking the brake pads for wear, and replacing them when needed – which is a simple five minute job."

Ernesto Colnago Celebrates 80th Birthday with Limited Edition Bike







Ernesto Colnago is 80 today and has celebrated his birthday with a special limited edition bike that is set to become a collectors’ item. Only 80 will be available globally.
The special bike is called the C59 Ottanta – which means eighty in Italian and has a gold finish. It was inspired by the iconic Colnago bikes of the past that were used so successfully by so many legendary professional riders and loved by thousands of cyclists around the world.
The C59 Ottanta has Master-like arabesque lug decorations and Ernesto Colnago’s signature, yet is made from the best possible carbon fibre and fitted with Campagnolo Super Record EPS 11s electronic components.
Colnago is known for its iconic ace of clubs logo but the C59 Ottanta has a special head badge: the original ‘Eagle and Arrow’ logo that was created in 1954 inspired by a headline in the local newspaper that described Colnago as fast as an arrow when he won a race.
Just 80 examples of this very special limited edition bike will be made and 20 have already been snapped up by collectors around the world.
Despite turning 80, Colnago was busy in his office in Cambiago, preferring to work than celebrate his birthday. He is still the first to arrive at the Colnago offices, just across the street from his home and is always the last to leave. Most people are happily retired at 80 but Colnago does not intend to retire just yet.
“My 80th birthday is an intermediate sprint, it’s the not the finish of my race. I still love to work and create new bikes. I don’t want a cake or a big party, the special bike is my way of sharing my birthday,” he said.

Colnago Launches Redesigned Website
Colnago has launched a completely redesigned www.colnago.com. I particularly like how easy it is to navigate through all the models and their specifications.
My favorite is the C59 Italia 150th which has been issued for this year to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. It will only be available until the end of the year; production will cease beginning next year. It is available in two versions: for electronic shifting systems such as Shimano Di2, and one for traditional mechanical shifting systems.

The NEWS section contains up to date news , at the moment focusing on Voeckler and the Europcar Colnagos in the Tour de France.

1960s Colnago








Early to mid-1960s Colnago bicycles are a very rare find. These had a head badge with "E. Colnago" and the model name, "La Freccia" with Cambiago underneath (related story here). So, when this bicycle appeared for sale I grabbed some photos. One thing we can ascertain with certainty: the inside photos were taken in the shop of Alberto Masi.
The seller wrote, "This is a great Colnago Super Freccia bike from 1960(s). Few bikes of this kind have survived in original painting. The lugs were hand cast by the man who subsequently received his appointment as a " Cavaliere del Lavoro" (Knight Master Artisan ) of the Italian Republic. The bike has all the original decals and the very very rare original badge. The kind of the frame looks like a second generation of the Colnago frame (you can see one Colnago pista bike of the first generation in original painting , 1958, on Classicrendevouz website ). This bike sports also all the original and period components like Campagnolo cranckset (50/46), Universal brakes, Campagnolo Gran Sport rear derailleurs, Bastia mudguards, Campagnolo pedals with Christophe toe clips and Alfredo Binda straps. We have also a Regina Extra chain and Regina Extra freewheel. The saddle is Cinelli Unicanitor and the bar with his stem are Cinelli in steel. The bike sizes are cm. 57 (c/t) or cm. 55 (c/c) x cm. 56,5 (c/c).
The bike has a great historical value for the Colnago brand."
I thought it would be worthwhile preserving the photos.

Happy Birthday Ernesto Colnago, 79

Happy Birthday to Ernesto Colnago who is celebrating 79 years today. One of ICJ's readers visited with Ernesto in January (above), Ernesto still looking very well. Today, Ernesto was busy receiving good wishes but too busy to talk too long as "il futuro non aspetta."

A Special Visit with Ernesto Colnago
Guest contributor Maman, from Israel, has a unique story to tell:
"Hi all,
Twenty-six years ago I was the Israeli champion for few years. back then I had a Colnago "Mexico". Two years ago I decided to start cycling again and I bought a Colnago "EPS" frame.
I was highly satisfied with the frame until I noticed, about 2 months ago, that some cracks appeared in the bottom of it. I tried to get help here in Israel but nobody could actually help me since I wasn't sure if it was a crack in the carbon or just glue crack, the glue that connects between the carbon parts (ed. note: the EPS is a lugged carbon frame). Searching for an answer to my problem, I was told by a friend that maybe the Colnago factory in Italy could help me.
I searched down the address and got on a plane to Italy with the frame. The day we visited the factory was a nice sunny day, just after the holidays, on January 3, 2011. I entered the factory and just as I entered I have met the secretary.
I explained my problem to her and she called Mr.Diego; Diego is a really nice guy. Well, I explained my problem to him and showed him the frame. He took the frame to their mechanics. After a few minutes we got an answer, the frame is not cracked and it was just a glue crack, and I was very happy.
I asked Mr. Diego if Mr. Ernesto was in the factory since it was my dream to meet him. Diego went upstairs to ask Ernesto if I can take a photo with him. The answer was yes. While going upstairs my heart was pumping hard and adrenaline rushed. When we got into his room Diego took our photo. I will always remember that day.
Because of all of that I bought a new EPS with Campagnolo Super Record. I love to ride and I love COLNAGO bikes.

Colnago for Pope John Paul II


During this holiday season it is timely to mention the golden bike made by Colnago for Pope John Paul II. In the words of Ernesto Colnago, "We built this golden bike for the Pope in 1979. It was a special day when we went to the Vatican to present it to him. Very emotional for me. I went with my entire family; my brother Paolo and his son Alessandro. We heard that the Pope liked to ride a bike and that he did a ride of 38km two times a week when he was in Krakow and he continued to ride when he was in Castel Gondolfo (the Pope's summer residence outside of Rome).
The Pope picked up this bike and told me it was marvelously light and that he wished he had one like it a long time ago!
I remember that the Pope said to me that "you are in the midst of all the cyclists and the sport and I want to bless cycling and all the riders." That really touched me deeply when the Pope said that.
I don't believe that Pope John Paul II actually rode this bike so after a year or so the Vatican contacted us to give this bike back and the Pope requested a sports type bike with regular flat handlebars so we built him one, a white one. That's the bike he rode in Castel Gondolfo."
This bike is on display in the Colnago museum in Cambiago.

Colnago iPad App



Colnago has often been at the forefront of bicycle design. Now they are out in front with this free iPad app that offers a look behind the scenes of this iconic brand with beautiful photography and close up pictures of Colnago bicycles. Included in the app:

Ferrari and Colnago Release CFXX Limited Edition Bike
