"PRODIGIOSA" by Aldo Gios

"PRODIGIOSA" is a new brand, separate from Gios, by Aldo Gios. PRODIGIOSA stands for PRO.DI.GIOS.A. - Progetti di Gios Aldo.

The frames incorporate the patented innovations of Aldo Gios, who began framebuilding in 1962,  that have graced Gios frames in the past.

The website is www.prodigiosa.it and also on Facebook here.

Background: as I understand it, in 2009 the Gios brothers, Aldo and  Alfredo, went their separate ways and the GIOS brand was split. "Gios Torino" frames made by Aldo were limited to sales in Italy. Now, the PRODIGIOSA by Aldo Gios is available worldwide.

Content for the Italian Cycling Journal is now based upon contributions from readers. Please contribute. Stories about rides, granfondos, touring, having a good time cycling in Italy, Italian cycling history, racing, etc. are always welcome. Contact me at veronaman@gmail.com.

GIOS, Re-inventing Itself, Part II

Alfredo Gios has contacted me to correct inaccuracies which were posted in "GIOS, Re-inventing Itself" article. As he said, the items contained therein did not correspond with the truth. Please note that I have updated the original article with the corrected information as below.

First, he points out that regarding the legal case in which GIOS was involved in that this case was won on behalf of GIOS in the Italian courts. GIOS also won a decision in the Belgian courts but that particular decision was overturned upon an appeal. Subsequently an agreement was reached between both parties.

Second, there is no truth to any story about financial difficulties at GIOS at any time.

Third, the GIOS 2010 catalog represents 36 models, over half of which are special racing models conceived and designed by him, Alfredo Gios, in Italy.

My thanks to Alfredo Gios for the corrections.

GIOS is a great brand which I'm sure everyone is happy to know continues its long traditions.

GIOS, Re-inventing Itself

NOTE: In a note received from Alfredo Gios in response to this article he stated that it contained inaccuracies, and that there were items that did not correspond with the truth. I wrote another article (here) with his comments, and I also decided to include them here in bold so that the record is clear.

In response to the article "What's Going On With GIOS?" I received additional information from Guido, who authors http://www.italiaanseracefietsen.wordpress.com/, which appeared in a European source:

"There were many rumors in recent months about the division of GIOS. Time for clarification and the real story behind all the developments of recent times.

There was no family feud between Alfredo and Aldo Gios, of this there is absolutely no question. The decision to split the old GIOS into two new parts was a pure business decision, motivated by an annoying longstanding legal matter.

GIOS was wrapped in a costly legal battle with one, for privacy reasons undisclosed, wealthy, Belgian dealer. A suit was involved which the Belgian won and the result was that GIOS could be in jeopardy.

NOTE: Alfredo Gios points out that regarding the legal case in which GIOS was involved in that this case was won on behalf of GIOS in the Italian courts. GIOS also won a decision in the Belgian courts but that particular decision was overturned upon an appeal. Subsequently an agreement was reached between both parties.

The case was very expensive for GIOS so much so that it affected the liquidity of the small company.

NOTE: Alfredo Gios says there is no truth to any story about financial difficulties at GIOS at any time.

The solution proved to be to liquidate the old GIOS. For the the Belgian party there was nothing left to achieve and no further damage could be caused to GIOS. The new GIOS is not a contracting party of the Belgians.

Then the new GIOS established a company in two parts run by Alfredo and his brother Aldo. Alfredo focuses his Japanese-made range from www.gios.it aimed and touring and city bikes. Marco and Aldo run the new racing bike through www.giostorino.it for race-oriented riders.

NOTE: Alfredo Gios reports that the GIOS 2010 catalog represents 36 models, over half of which are special racing models conceived and designed by him in Italy.

GIOS is beginning new collection for 2010 building on the tradition of the past. Including specifically the individual 'Italian' philosophy of frame building geometry is maintained. GIOS is alive!"

What's Going On With GIOS?

The following four photos are from the "Original GIOS Torino" website, read on.....

The "GIOS by Alfredo Gios" website, http://www.gios.it/, has posted this information on the home page:

"2009: An historical brand toward the new century

This year represents a new milestone and turning point for the "Blue Bikes brand" as Alfredo signs a strategic agreement with a Top Japanese Company in order to strengthen and spread even more the presence of the GIOS brand worldwide: new innovative models 100% styled and designed in Italy with the logistical and commercial support of a new Osaka based international sales office.

From this new joint-venture the GIOS of the 21st century is born in order to serve even more and better than before all the needs of the nowadays consumers worldwide. Keep yourself posted on all the latest news about your favourite brand at www.gios.it or feel free to ask for more information by sending us an e-mail."

Under the "Corporate" button there is:

GIOS Design / Innovation Office:

email: gios@gios.it

GIOS International / Sales Office:

tel: +81 06-6368-9700
fax: +81 06-6368-9701
email: international@gios.it

Given that, it appears that there is a move to build GIOS bikes in Japan.

However, then this different GIOS website has been launched:

The "Original GIOS Torino", http://www.giostorino.it/, proclaiming "the true steel frames made in Italy." Shown, and appearing int he photographs above, is the most well-known GIOS frame, the Super Record Strada with the Gt logo that was created by Aldo Gios in 1973 fro Team Brooklyn. There is also a Super Record Pista model plus Ti, Alu and Alu/Carbon models.

The site also says, "Aldo and Marco Gios wait for you in order to present the new collection of frames and bicycles that have made cycling history."

The address for GIOS Torino is given as:

BICICLETTE GIOS
Via Kant n° 6
10088 Volpiano - (TO)

A family split?

GIOS Flickr Group, "Tante vittorie, un solo colore: Blu Gios!"

Guido van den Anker writes in from the Netherlands to tell us about his Dutch language website, www.italiaanseracefietsen.wordpress.com/.

There are two particularly interesting sections to the site which is easy to navigate:

1. A GIOS Flickr photo pool which he has been started at www.flickr.com/groups/giosbicycles/. There are currently 151 GIOS photographs including photos of these bikes:
•Gios Super Record 1978 reissue from 2003
•Gios Super Record 1979
•Gios Super Record 1979 model III
•Gios Super Record 1979 van Didi Thurau
•Gios Super Record 1980 van Fons De Wolf
•Gios Super Record 1982
•Gios Pista Super Record 1974
•Gios Professional 1975
•Gios Compact Pro (year unknown)
•Gios Aerodynamic (1982)
•Gios New A-90

Guido invites GIOS owners to send photos in.

The other aspect of Guido's site that is interesting is his list of of more than 170 Italian bicycle manufacturers and their related web links, look under "merkenlijst".

By the way, take a look at this entry in my blog to see how a GIOS Super Record was delivered to customers. Will we ever see anything like this again???
