Breaking Away, the movie

One of the great cycling movies of all time. I had to watch it again over the holidays. Dave, nineteen, has just graduated high school, with his 3 friends, the comical Cyril, the warm hearted but short-tempered Moocher, and the athletic, spiteful but good-hearted Mike. Dave enjoys racing bikes and hopes to race the Italians (team Cinzano) one day, and even takes up the Italian culture, much to his friends and parents annoyance. While meanwhile, the 4 friends try to break away from their townie, Indiana reputation while fighting with nearby university snobs. Dave's friends soon persuade him to form a cycling team for the annual Indiana University Little 500 bicycle race. Using identical AMF Roadmaster track bicycles, the competition promises to be a battle between the wealthy male fraternity members of the university and Dave's group.

In the movie Dave's bike was a 1978 MASI Gran Criterium.

If you haven't see this movie make sure you do!

  2. I recently watched the movie (again) - its been a few years. Its an all around great movie for sure.

There's also something about '70s movies in general. They move slower and have more character.

If that movie was remade today, Dave would have to win the race while shooting a gun in slow motion - complete with freestyle backflip across the line.

    No thanks....

  3. Breaking Away has a great cast and some very memorable lines of dialogue. There's not much suspense about who's going to win the big race.
