Seven Years Without Marco Pantani

February 14, 2011, marks seven years without Marco Pantani.

There is a museum dedicated to Marco Pantani: the "Spazio Pantani" (the Pantani Space) located in the town of his birthplace, Cesenatico.

The multi-media museum, located near the railway station, traces the career of Pantani through an exhibition of photos, memorabilia and audiovisual materials. The museum is divided into three halls, each of 100 sq. meters, named Mortirolo, Alpe d'Huez and Bocchetta. Each famous climbs which Pantani won stages on.

  1. I'm sure you will not like this comment, but your continual praising of a tragic known doper, who killed himself with an overdose in a rundown Adriatic hotel does cycling and the young racing cyclist who follow no favours. It may have missed your attention but Ricardo Ricco, a passionate fan of Marco Pantani, who last season returned to racing following a two year ban for CERA, has recently endangered his own life by self-blood doping. I'm sorry for both of them and worried as to what Ricardo will do next.

I love your blog but I believe that your stance on Marco Pantani is irresponsible. All of the Journalists/writers who make heroes of known dopers must take some responsibility when some other young fool follows their example.

  2. @jonnyvelo: Thanks for your comment. I purposefully didn't write (AGAIN) about Ricco, I hate doping and dopers also.

Having said that, Marco Pantani holds a special place in Italian cycling. It's the way it is, and that's why I mention the anniversary of his death.
