On Sunday March 1st, 2009, the 1st edition of the Granfondo Colnago-San Diego took place. Organized by Rob Klingensmith, President of Gran Fondo USA, LLC, the goal was to recreate the amateur racing experience that is so common in Italy. “The idea to organize an Italian-themed granfondo here in US came to us after I rode several Gran Fondos in Italy,” said Rob Klingensmith who is an avid cyclist “We were impressed with the energy, enthusiasm and festival atmosphere of the events in Italy. Plus, the cycling was extremely challenging. We were convinced that American cyclists would embrace the concept, too”.
Indications are that Gran Fondo USA, LLC,, is working on bringing the granfondo format to several other U.S. locations. Now, wouldn't that be great?
