2012 Giro d'Italia, Stage 10 Start

Today's stage will come down to the last 5km, beginning from Rivotorto. The road narrows to remain flat until 4000 meters when riders will face the "Muro" ("Wall") of San Damiano, 1500 m at an average grade of 11.2% with a maximum of 15%. Then, a downhill section for 1 km before entering Assisi. Upon entering the centro storico, on mainly cobbles, the riders will pass the narrow city gate of San Francisco. The last 700 m from the Upper Basilica of St. Francis is basically straight uphill on a road with cobblestones and a narrow finish line.
The Porta San Francisco:

Assisi is a beautiful city to ride into.

This year UNICEF has partnered with the Giro d'Itala. Today, Direttore Generale of RCS Sport, Michele Acquaronea and Direttore Generale of Unicef Italia, Davide Usai, and the four classification leaders launched the "Vogliamo Zero" (We Want Zero") campaign against infant mortality at the start of the stage.

  1. Watching this stage brought back fond memories of the tours we used to run in Umbria and Le Marche. In fact, we rode many of the same roads on our way from Orvieto to Spello while earlier in the day they cycled over roads we enjoyed while living in Viterbo in 2010. We'll cut our final cycling day in Tuscany short tomorrow in order to offer our clients a chance to see the Giro finish at Montecatini - it's too close to our Tuscan HQ to miss it!
