Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Barracuda), above, at today's start in Sulmona is the first Canadian to wear the leader's jersey. Including Hesjedal the Maglia Rosa has been worn by riders from 22 countries. The first foreign leader in the GC was Frenchman Lucien Petit Breton in 1911 (he was the race leader but there was not a leader's jersey).
The pink jersey was introduced at the 1931 Giro d'Italia. The first wearer was Italian Learco Guerra who won the Milan-Mantova stage on May 10th.
