23 Teams Will Race 2013 Giro d'Italia

Team Katusha will take part in the forthcoming Giro d’Italia that will be staged from the 4th to the 26th May, starting in Naples and finishing in Brescia. They will be the 23rd team at the start.

Katusha has been added to the list of teams participating at the Corsa Rosa, previously announced on 8th January by the organizers RCS Sport / La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The International Cycling Union late last year defined the 18 ProTeams. Team Katusha were excluded from the list.

On 8th January, as usual to give the opportunity to all teams to better organize their season, RCS Sport announced the 4 wild card teams of the Giro d’Italia 2013. Meanwhile, the Russian team had lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

On 15th February, the CAS upheld the appeal. On 18th February, the UCI, having taken note of the decision of the CAS, granted Katusha a ProTeam license and, rewriting their rules, chose to increase the number of ProTeams entitled to participate in World Tour races to 19.

On 2nd April, the UCI passed this exemption to the Giro d’Italia – rules for the maximum number of athletes participating in a race was previously 200 and with 18 ProTeams – so that in 2013, 207 riders and 19 ProTeams and 4 Professional Continental Teams will start.
