In a stage which saw the big teams taking big turns at the front in order to be first to the bottom of the finishing climbs in Assisi the winner was Spaniard Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha). Finishing 2nd and 3rd were Bartosz Huzarski (NetApp) at 2 seconds and Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) in same time.
Rodriguez also dons the Maglia Rosa with a 17 second advantage over Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Barracuda) and 32 seconds over Paolo Tiralongo (Astana).
"Everything went according to plan. Winning here was what I had imagined. Taking the Maglia Rosa was a simple consequence. A lovely consequence, also because it is the first time for my team," said the 33 year old Rodriguez. "I love it when a plan comes together. From here on, if something does not go well, I will this Maglia Rosa to take home, it was the only leaders jersey of the three Grand Tours that I was missing. Out of respect for the Maglia Rosa my team will work to not lose it the next days."
Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin - Barracuda) finished 6th at 6 seconds but with 20 bonus seconds to the stage winner he lost the pink jersey. "I'm still close to the top and still in the big picture. I'm happy at the way I rode in the final, and without the time bonuses I'd still have the jersey."
