Matthew Goss (Orica-GreenEdge) is the winner of Stage 3 in a sprint finish which with 125 m to go saw a pileup that included race leader Taylor Phinney (BMC).
“I’m really happy to win today to pay back the team for placing me perfectly,” said Goss. “They worked incredibly hard for me all day.” The win today marks the first victory for the Australian team as the newly named Orica-GreenEdge.
"I can not explain why such risks are taken in the sprint," said Phinney. "For now I feel ok. Let's see what the doctors say but I hope to continue. I've got a hole in my foot but I hope there's nothing serious, I'm feeling better than straight after the crash. Fortunately, tomorrow is a rest day." Race doctor, Dario Spinelli, will go with Phinney to a hospital in Verona tonight and there will be an update on his status afterwards.
Mark Cavendish was also among those caught in the crash and had some serious road rash:
The crash was caused by Roberto Ferrari (Androni Giocattoli) who suddenly veered to his right causing the pileup. As a result he was relegated by the race commissaires. The last km:
