World Champion Mark Cavendish (Sky Procycling) won the 209 km, 5th stage, in a sprint finish ahead of Matthew Goss (Orica GreenEdge) and Daniele Bennati (Radioshack Nissan). The stage was completed in 4:43:15 at an average speed of 44,271 km/h. This was the ninth Giro stage victory for Cavendish since his first in 2008.
At Monte Gabicche, a small climb of 2 km at 4% with 35 km to go, several sprinters including Farrar, Hushovd and Guardini went off the back and were unable to get back into the peloton before it starting hitting 60 km/h on the coast road into Fano.
"I didn’t feel great three days after the crash," said Cavendish. "I was a little bit tired and we did really what the other teams have done and let the others do the work. But we were able to commit all our guys at the end and we took the race up with 10k to go and it was textbook work from the team. The Colombians haven’t done much lead-out work before and it’s taken them a couple of days to get into it but then they did an awesome job to set us up in the lead-out today. Then obviously it’s all the guys that I’ve grown up with delivering me to the line. I’m super super happy! I’m even more happy because my girlfriend (
ed note: former model Peta Todd) and my daughter are here and I had my daughter on the podium. It’s the first race she’s been to watch me at and I’m so happy to make her proud and win for her here."
Ramunas Narvadauskas (Garmin Barracuda) kept the Maglia Rosa today, saying after the race, "It's the first time a Lithuanian has worn the pink jersey. It's very important for Lithuania because cycling is not one of the most popular sports
. Despite this, my Maglia Rosa has been on all the newscasts and newspapers. Now, my country knows the Giro d'Italia."
