Colombian Miguel Rubiano Chavez (Androni Giocattoli – Venzuela) won the 6th stage in an impressive breakaway of 35 km. He and Parma's Adriano Malori (Lampre – ISD), in small chase group, were tied virtually on the road for the Maglia Rosa as the race neared the finish but Malori took a critical 12 bonus seconds with his second place sprint finish ahead of Michal Golas (Omega Pharma Quick Step) to put him into the pink jersey.

It was a surprise to see Malori escape from the peloton with a small group on the undulating course since he is a time trail specialist (under-23 world time trial champion in Varese in 2008) and passista (a rider that can keep a hard, steady, pace for a long period). "I broke away well and really gave it everything, it was harder than we were expecting. Nothing can compare to this, this is what all young cycling fans dream of", Malori said after kissing the jersey several times. "And, I really had to sweat for it. At a certain point I didn't see the road anymore, when they said I could take the jersey I gave it everything. I was getting updates on the lead and more than anything I was keeping an eye on Golas. I got a bit emotional as soon as I finished, I had to take a deep breath to stop myself from crying on the podium. Sprinting isn't really my forte but luckily I managed to come through. Maybe tomorrow I'll have to give up this jersey but that's OK, it's fantastic".
Miguel Angel Rubiano Chavvez was happy too, "In the last few kilometers I was thinking about my wife and baby daughter who will be born soon. I know these roads well because I lived here, it was great winning in front of people that know me".
