2012 Giro d'Italia, Stage 9 Results

Spaniard Francisco Ventoso (Movistar) won the short, 166 km, ninth stage from San Giorgio del Sannio to Frosinone when a crash on a sharp left hand turn with 370 m to go took out the sprint favorites. The crash was triggered by Pozzato which in turn caused the crashes of Goss, Cavendish, Haedo and others.

Ryder Hesjedal remains in pink, maintaining 9" on Rodriguez and 15" on Tiralongo.

"I came to the Giro to win a stage and I have so I'm happy. I have a teammate doing well in the GC standings, Intxausti Elorriaga in 5th, so now I will do everything to help him," said Ventoso. About the crash, "There is a bit of everything involved, those who don't look at the map, those who don't look at who is riding next to them, we all want to win, we all have pressure to win. In Herning and Horsens, and even today I was a little bit further back as I did not want to risk too much. Now, the sprints are like this unfortunately." He continued, "I think it's impossible to find a straight stretch of 5 km every day. Here, I think the curve at 400 meters was too dangerous. Then, it's up to us to use our heads. Tomorrow: Stage 10 is classified as a "medium mountain" stage from Civitavecchia to Assisi, 186 km. The last 4 km are on a twisting road, with two hills and on cobblestones. All the GC contenders will want to arrive in front at the base of the first hill or risk losing precious seconds.
