Garmin Barracuda won the Stage 4, 33.2 km, team time trial in Verona in 37'04", an average speed of 53,741 km/h (good
prediction by Elia Viviani). Lithuanian Ramunas Narvadauskas (Garmin Barracuda) is the new race leader and also the best young rider. Second and third were Katusha at 5" (an unexpected, fantastic result) and Astana at 22".
Narvadauskas, the first Lithuanian to wear the Maglia Rosa, said, "My pink jersey is incredible! A few weeks ago I was in bed with a broken collarbone. Today I am wearing the pink jersey at the Giro."
BMC Racing Team’s riders were the last of the 23 teams to start the time trial Wednesday and finished 10th at 31". Taylor Phinney, the pink jersey holder at the start, knew it would be hard to keep the race lead considering the misfortune he had in stage 3, with a crash in the last 200 meters that cost him 3 stitches at the right ankle. Right after he crossed the finish line, Phinney thanked all his teammates for their help, "I gave the maximum I had, but I had nothing to give, I am so thankful to my teammates because without their great help and strong support I’m not even sure I could have done it to the finish and I look forward to pay them back during the rest of the Giro”, an exhausted Phinney said.
Phinney had misfortune in the three stages he wore the pink jersey: a
crash in Herning which then caused his chain to come off, a
crash in Horsens that resulted in a hole in his ankle that required stitches, and today in which he went off course and had to cyclocross to get back on the course.
