Denmark's Lars Ytting Bak (Lotto Belisol), a time trial specialist, won the 12th stage by beginning his day in a 10 rider breakaway group at 50km from the start and sprinting to the finish line at a moment when there was a hesitation by his remaining companions. Sandy Casar (FDJ BigMat) and Costa Rica Andrey Bikkazakova Amador (Movistar) were 2nd and 3rd.
"
I won a team time trial last year but this is my first solo victory in the last three years and my first stage victory in a Grand Tour," said Bak. "I always thought I might be able to win a big race. Now I did and it seems that everything around me turns more slowly. I'm 32 and have been a professional for 11 years, today I was also lucky ... I am so happy!"
Joaquin Rodriguez (Team Katusha) keeps the Maglia Rosa another day and retains the same 17 second advantage over Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Barracuda) and 32 seconds over Paolo Tiralongo (Astana); Sandy Casar (Fra) FDJ-Big Mat, who was the virtual pink jersey for most of the day moves into 3rd on GC at 26 seconds with Tiralongo pushed into 4th. Rodriquez: "Beginning Saturday those who want to win the Giro d'Italia won't be able to hide their cards any longer. At that point I'll be able to say what my chances are of a victory."
