2012 Giro d'Italia, Stage 17 Start
The classification leaders at the start:
Maglia Rosa – GC: Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha)
Maglia Rossa – Points Competition: Mark Cavendish (Sky ProCycling)
Maglia Bianca – Best Young Rider: Sergio Henao Montoya (Sky Procycling)
Maglia Azzurra – KoM: Matteo Rabottini (Farnese Selle Italia)
Today there are four major "colli" today in the Dolomites, no possibility in the last 75 km for the riders to recover:
Passo Valparola, 2nd category 2197 m – km 71.6
Passo Duran, 1st category 1601 m – km 127.8
Forcella Staulanza, 2nd category 1766 m – km 148.7
Passo Giau (1st category 2236 m – km 168.2
The Passo Valparola descent is a very fast one while the following three technical. At the end of the last descent there is a short climb in Pocol at 8 km from the finish. Click on image to enlarge.
For me this is one of the most beautiful areas in the world to ride. You should go if you can.
This is the fifth time Cortina has hosted a Giro finish. The stage winners have been: 1939 Secondo Magni, 1948 Fausto Coppi, 1951 Luison Bobet, 1955 Angelo Conterno and 1977 Giuseppe Parletto.
