Sicilian Paolo Tiralongo (Astana) gave every thing he had to give at the finish to win Stage 7 ahead of Michele Scarponi. Third was Frank Schelck (Radioshack Nissan) at 3 seconds.
Canadian Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Barracuda) is the new Maglia Rosa.
"I'd been saying for weeks to Martino (Giuseppe Martinelli, the manager of Astana) that I'd do something special on Saturday," said the 34 year old Tiralongo. "Before the start he and Sefer (the sporting director) said that I had a chance. Even though it required a great deal of effort to catch up with Scarponi at 250 m from the end I thought he would have to slow down, and as soon as he turned round and sat down I overtook him. But as you saw, I was absolutely finished at the end." Tiralongo is also now 2nd on GC to Hesjedal.
"The stage, also because of the heat, was demanding," Scarponi said. "In the early part we supported Malori (pink jersey at start), in the last 1500 meters I was pedaling in the head position when I saw that the other riders took a bend the wrong way; Niemiec raised the pace, then I attacked but Tiralongo was more skillful than me: maybe I started too early."
Hesjedal becomes the first Canadian to wear the Maglia Rosa saying, "We were frustrated after yesterday's Porto Sant'Elpidio stage, we had a plan that we failed to successfully put into action. Now I have to focus on defending my position and trying to remain in the top 10".
