The eight cyclists remaining in the Leopard Trek team at the Giro d'Italia have decided to leave the race after the death of their Belgian sprinter Wouter Weylandt yesterday. "We have a lot of respect for the Giro d'Italia and for cycling, but we simply cannot continue racing given the circumstances," said the team's captain, Fabian Wegmann of Germany this evening. "We are professional athletes but we feel this is the right thing to do."
Tyler Farrar of the Garmin team, Weylandt's training partner and close friend, had also decided to leave the race according to David Millar.
